Is the public version of you the real you?

We all think we’re being real—whether in public or in private—but the deeper challenge is questioning whether we truly know our real selves at all. In any case, even when we know ourselves we might face various pressures that push us to fit in or not cause trouble – so even the most well-intentioned person might struggle to always be 100% real in public. Sometimes the simplest questions are actually the most complex. Thankfully, we have some wonderful members of the community who offered to share their thoughts on this challenging question.

Holly Nelson

Yes and no! When I am performing, I suppose I seem very glamorous and confident to the audience. I often wear long, formal gowns when I am performing classical music, or if I am playing with a tango ensemble, I typically wear something hip and a bit edgy. The public version of me is the real me. I try to be consistent in how I show up, whether I’m with family, friends or in the community. I don’t like pretending to be someone I’m not, so what you see is genuinely who I am. Read more>>

Derrick Credito

A lot people see me in different public roles. As an English professor, I tend to speak in more measured and guarded way than when I’m rocking out with my band. Every once in a while, these two very different worlds I inhabit spill over or intersect. The public version of me is real but it’s also full of variety. Read more>>
