We recently had the chance to connect with The Fisher Girls and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning The Fisher Girls, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
We are making major waves. Recently, we performed at the CFG Baltimore arena for the CIAA league.
Alma Fisher, one half of the duo, is a published author. Her book, Bits of Poetry Spoken Word, is a transparent collection detailing her personal failures and growth. Through her intimate poetry, she aims to show young women they are not alone in their struggles and can overcome them, just as Christ enabled.
Our song, “Narrow Way,” is featured in the Fruit Bearing Studios film The Company Keep, available on Amazon Prime and other streaming platforms.
In addition to our musical achievements, we were interviewed on The Business Talk Show with Lou Fields and Dr. Rogers, which aired on a Cathy Hughes-owned Radio One station. Our newest single, “I Can Go Home,” also premiered on Radio One. Being featured on the largest African-American-owned and operated broadcast company in the U.S. was a truly humbling experience. All glory to God.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
The Fisher Girls are a group of singers, songwriters, authors, and actresses who share their faith through gospel music. We sing from a place of genuine vulnerability, using our songs to tell stories of the highs and lows of our walk with Jesus Christ. Our music merges all these experiences with the love of Jesus Christ to create a sound that is uniquely The Fisher Girls.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Our feeling of empowerment was born from a creative journey that began in elementary school. From a young age, we had the incredible opportunity to express ourselves through art.
The ability to write songs is a powerful tool. It allows us to create awareness, bring joy, and help others release their grief. It’s also a deeply therapeutic way to tell our own stories and share our testimonies with the world. This creative expression is our superpower, and successfully pursuing it is one of the most fulfilling feelings.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has a unique power to reveal who you are, far more than any win, victory, or successful moment ever could. While success is helpful, suffering builds your character. It exposes your weak spots, and if you allow it, it will make you stronger. What once bothered you will no longer have the same power.
This process shapes and strengthens your identity, showing you who you are under pressure and who you can become. While we don’t like to suffer, it’s necessary for our growth, development, and progress in life.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
We used to believe that gospel music had to sound a certain way to be considered authentic. We thought we had to conform to the traditional norms of our upbringing to be accepted by our peers and community.
Now, we realize that’s not our path. We are meant to be trendsetters, a collection of different sounds and influences, not just one. As artists, we’ve learned that true success comes from doing the work God has called us to do. We no longer worry about what people think or how they believe we should sound. Instead, we operate with the unique calling Jesus has given us. We aren’t traditional in the standard sense; we are traditionally us, exactly the way God orchestrated us to be.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Growing up in the church, we initially took singing for granted because it was something we always had to do. However, as God began to breathe new life into our creativity—restoring our gifts and inspiring us to write—we realized that this is a part of our purpose. It’s what we were born to do.
When you’re operating in your true purpose, everything feels like a natural fit. The sound is accurate, it belongs to you, and you flow differently. You have the strength and endurance to execute the gifts God has placed in your hands. You can write and create songs no matter the time or place, whether you’re happy, sad, depressed, or lonely. When it’s your purpose, you function in it regardless of the difficulties.
