Story & Lesson Highlights with Shirnice Kelly of Baltimore County

We recently had the chance to connect with Shirnice Kelly and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shirnice , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity. To me, integrity is about consistency—doing the right thing whether someone is watching or not. It’s showing up with honesty, keeping your word, and treating people with respect in every space you enter. Integrity is the foundation of trust, and without trust you can’t build strong relationships, strong businesses, or strong communities.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Shirnice, and I’m the owner of Apple’D ( pronounced Appluad)—a treat business that turns candy apples and custom sweets into show-stopping creations. What started as a passion for making beautiful, flavorful candy apples grew into a full business built on creativity, quality, and love for celebrating life’s sweetest moments. From classic candy apples to dipped strawberries, pretzels, Oreos, and more, Apple’D is all about making treats that not only taste amazing but also leave a lasting impression.”

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The experience of motherhood encompasses deep personal responsibility. My child embodies my morals and values, as well as my manner of communication. It is important to recognize that my child is continuously observing and learning from my behaviors, which necessitates a heightened awareness of how I present myself in the world. I understand that my actions and demeanor are influential in shaping a developing individual, as I am effectively guiding a young person in understanding how to engage with their environment.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely! About 2 years ago, I faced a significant challenge in my personal life. During that time, my orders dwindled, and my social media presence felt stagnant. I was navigating a heavy moment and found myself on the brink of giving up, contemplating a fresh start.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Embracing a better version of myself. Two years ago marked a challenging chapter in my life, and I made a commitment to become a stronger woman, nurturing myself, and thriving as a businesswoman.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
As a natural creative, I need creative outlets and that’s where my treats come in.
I find joy and peace in decorating treats. They are a blank canvas that inspires my imagination, sparking hundreds of ideas.
