Story & Lesson Highlights with Shakya Vaughn of Dundalk

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shakya Vaughn. Check out our conversation below.

Shakya, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Recently, I’ve been participating in a meditation challenge on the Open app. It’s this stunningly designed breath work and mindfulness app that helps me stay calm, confident, and clear-minded. It’s become my favorite reset between projects or daily in the mornings.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Shakya Vaughn, founder and creative director of Blk Panther Creative, a Baltimore brand and packaging design studio. Unlike other agencies, we craft bold, striking brand and packaging identities for beverage brands that want to stand out. Our identities don’t just sit on shelves; they dominate, in-store and online.

At BPC, strategy always comes before aesthetics. Every brand we craft is built to perform, uniquely combining bold design, distinct storytelling, and shelf-impact that turns curiosity into loyalty.

Right now, I’m developing a lineup of bold beverage concept projects. These challenge what packaging can be in 2026 and beyond. The future of design isn’t just about looking good; it’s about owning your space and daring to redefine it.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Honestly, as a kid between the ages of two and eight, I was unstoppable. You couldn’t tell me anything, yet I had such a passion for learning. I had an unshakable confidence and a sense that the world was mine to explore. I didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer, and I moved through life with pure certainty. I’ve been on a mission to reconnect with that version of me ever since. She’s still there, just older, wiser, and running a brand now.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self that failure isn’t something to avoid; it’s the key to success. Every setback is data, not defeat. For a long time, I let the fear of failure keep me in limbo, stuck in planning instead of taking action. Between grief, ADHD, and perfectionism, I lost time trying to ‘get it right.’ Now I know that action creates opportunities, and that building systems that work with me, not against me, is how I move forward. Perfection doesn’t exist. Progress does. And that’s where real power lives.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the design industry is that a degree is necessary for success. Sure, it looks nice on a résumé and can open doors early on, but it’s not the deciding factor. I’ve seen designers with degrees struggle to find work, and self-taught creatives building six-figure studios from their bedrooms. What really matters is your drive, your eye, and your consistency. The tools are out there; you just have to use them with intention.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as someone who left a lasting mark on the design community, not just for my work, but for the impact I had on people’s feelings. That I was genuine, bold, and unapologetically myself. That I spoke my mind, inspired others to do the same, and poured everything into my craft. Even with a busy schedule, I always made time for my people; whether that meant family, friends, or an aspiring designer stopping me in an airport for a quick photo. I want my legacy to be proof that you can build success and stay human through it all.
