Niya Thomas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Niya, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
One thing I feel is misunderstood about my business is the very products that I offer, specifically the squeezable wax melts. I always say my wax melts are a “if you know, you know” type of thing. Nobody knows they’re missing something good, until they finally experience that “something” that’s good. Once you finally experience it, and realize you’ve been missing this good thing for so long it’ll make you
not want to miss it/go without it ever again. In this scenario, my wax melts, is the thing people are missing out on. I’ve had customers reach out to me with reviews as such, and they’ve been a returning customer since then!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a 25 year-old candle creator and been in the industry for going on 4 years now. I started my business during a time period of my life that was very dark, and I felt that making candles could be something that brings a sense of light back into my life. I also believed that candle making would make a very peaceful hobby for me during that time. Those two elements together, light and peace, is what gave me the idea of the name “Glims of Tranquility. Which translates to “light of peace”.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Oh this is an ironic one lol. As a child I always believed that “I wasn’t creative”.. It was something I said all the time, so of course I actually started believing it. In 2024, God started revealing to me in small, but huge ways, just how creative I really am. For example, at first I started off with just candles, but now I also offer wax melts; and NOT the boring traditional kind you typically see.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There was multiple times I almost gave up making candles. In fact, it was actually a time I did give up. Back in light 2023/early 2024, I went almost a whole year without making the candle. I felt like I completely lost my spark for candle-making but eventually it came back!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
God’s. I wouldn’t just use the word “ideas” but I heavily rely on His word/ instructions.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when i’m in the presence of God and I feel His Holy Spirit so strongly. I also feel most at peace when i’m doing something creative, I feel very productive when i’m in my creative flow state.
