Story & Lesson Highlights with Maris Alani of Baltimore County

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Maris Alani. Check out our conversation below.

Maris, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
A recent moment that made me feel proud, has to be when I found out I was nominated for the nail excellence awards. I have been nominated for Nail Tech of the Year. Which was a complete surprise and honor for me. I feel beyond proud of myself and my work that I can be in nominated in that category among other amazingly talented Nail Techs. I never in a million years would have thought the first Nail Excellence Awards I’d be nominated for Nail Tech of the Year. It’s honestly an indescribable feeling of joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi Everyone, my name is Maris Alani. I am a 22 yr old Nail Technician. My brand is Orchid Nailss by Maris Alani. I started doing nails when I was just 14 in my freshman year of high school. I always loved everything about Nail Art. And now being a licensed nail tech and being highly skilled in my craft I am able to recreate all the nail sets I used to show the techs at the nail salons growing up.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My Parents! I’ve always been extremely artistic growing up. Almost every Christmas or birthday I got some kind of Art Set or drawing kit. I love to draw and paint so when I turned to doing nails. My parents were on board 100% not only was I saving them money! But I continued to express that creative side of myself.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There has been so many times where I wanted to give up. I took multiple breaks from doing nails and didn’t accept new clients. I felt like I wasn’t good enough. I almost convinced myself I couldn’t do it anymore. I remember sitting with myself and thinking what could be plan B? What’s my back up plan? And that’s when it hit me! There is no plan b or back up plan. This is what I planned and set myself to do. I couldn’t give up on myself. A client might not like the way I do nails and that’s fine but that doesn’t mean the next won’t love the nails I do.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That gel-x nails aren’t press-on nails. There it goes I just exposed the biggest lie ever! Gel-X nails are the exact same thing as a press-on nail. The only slight difference between the two is the materials of the nail tip.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Absolutely!, My entire life, my parents have had multiple businesses! I have a family full of entrepreneurs! From the beauty industry to retail ,to big companies ,all different types of businesses. Becoming an entrepreneur myself was something that I destined to become.
