Story & Lesson Highlights with Liza Hathaway Matthews of All of Maryland

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Liza Hathaway Matthews. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Liza , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
There are so many things that I do on a creative level that make me totally lose track of time. I find that can be good thing and gives me the time to continue to grow and learn. As a creator, painter, textile designer and most recently a flower designer I relish the time and easily get lost in my process. As it’s summertime, I absolutely love flowers and my garden, Being a creator, I continue to add to my brand. Flower Designing is my newest passion that includes my love for painting, color and texture.

I recently did some floral arrangements for an engagement surprise party. It was such fun with a few parameters given by the client. The client trusted me and my work and said just ‘have fun’. Needless to say, I got lost in the arrangements of different flowers in blues, lilacs, white and green. I am happy to say the client was thrilled with the array of arrangements. .

Sometimes creativity can’t be rushed and that is when you take a breath and lean into the process.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an abstract and contemporary artist, textile designer, and flower designer. I absolutely love to CREATE! Whether I’m painting, creating textile designs or arranging flowers, the overall process just makes me happy and thankful that I can do what I love everyday.

I had the good fortune of attending The Maryland Institute, College of Art with a major in oil painting and a minor in interior design. My paintings are assortment of landscapes and florals with a concentration on color, texture and pattern. I started with painting canvases that morphed into designing fabric and wallpaper, table linens, one of a kind leather cuffs and now floral designs.

I have projects going on at the same time which makes everyday very different. Currently, I am working on the final designs for a wedding in October that is going to be so beautiful.

I love what I do! Please contact me for a painting, commission, table linens and consultation for flowers. Love to hear from you!

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I remember as a little girl in elementary school I had a wonderful art teacher, Mrs. Davis. She opened up my world to art and creating just about anything I put my mind to do. Our class projects ranged from sculpture, silkscreening, painting, weaving and making jewelry. The options were endless and Mrs. Davis pushed me to do anything and to believe in myself.

Needless to say Mrs. Davis’s art class was my favorite during Elementary school. . She had everything to do in me attending the Maryland Institute, College of Art and pursing my passion. So thankful for her guidance and care.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I really think the only fear I have is running out of time to do everything I want to do in my life. I love trying new mediums, creative ways to express myself and learning about anything! We are surrounded by so many resources and stimulation daily and it’s hard to weed out what you’re interested in pursuing.

I also know that fear can also be very motivating at the same time! Go figure. 😊

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that my family and extended family really matter to me. They always will there with my wonderful husband, three fabulous children, two great son in laws and my golden retriever, Stella.

My circle of friends are amazing and rally around me through the good and bad times and I’m blessed to have them in my life.

Life is so precious and as I get older every minute counts and I try to live every day as it’s my last.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope I am remembered as a kind, caring, and interesting person that is interested in everything and everyone. My true legacy will be my family. It does not get any better than that!
