Story & Lesson Highlights with Kobe Morrison of West Baltimore

Kobe Morrison shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Kobe, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
One of my proudest moments in Music so far has been performing at AFRAM’s 2025 local artist talent showcase! I won 3rd place out of about 7 acts, while performing some of my original music for the first time. It was such a huge opportunity and just overall a very special experience that I got to have with my family, friends, and even newer friends that I made that day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey, my name is Kobe Morrison! I’m an actor & singer-songwriter from Baltimore! I’m an independent artist who’s been making Pop/R&B music since 2021. I’ve just released the music video for my new single “All Night”, from my upcoming debut album, coming later this year.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
God has always seen me. He’s always been there with me, building me and shaping me to become the person I am today. And still is. There are so many lessons that I’ve learned, which I reflect back on, and I am super grateful to have learned from them. Even if they came from unfortunate circumstances, they teach me something new. These experiences help me to grow into the person I’m called to be, which God has always known.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I feel like me turning my pain into music is my superpower. Songwriting takes those really bold emotions I have and refocuses my energy to make something really beautiful that I’m proud of, and in turn want to share and hope other people can relate to those feelings, too. Those are the types of songs that can be quicker for me to write because those raw emotions just flow out of me as I pull from my experiences. Then I feel like I’ve perfectly captured how I felt into a piece of art.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely! Fun fact: My stage name is my given name, Kobe Morrison. I’ve considered changing it to K. Nijal once, because I googled myself and found at least 2 other people with my name. Then I realized that having a stage name feels like putting on a cooler alter ego version of myself. Which is really cool. But it’s not who I am all the time. And I would want my brand to be an honest representation of all parts of me. Not just the super cool, flashy stuff. Which is what my given name symbolizes in itself. All of me.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m doing what I was born to do! From a very young age, I was blessed to know that I had a passion for wanting to perform and create! But during most of my youth, I was set on wanting to become an actor and singer. But towards the end of high school and start of college is when I realized that I have just as much of a passion for being a creator and not just a performer. Now seeking a career in both. I love to write, film, direct, choreograph, puppeteer, music produce, etc. And thankfully, I’ve been able to grow in all those areas because God has been with me to help me discover these different parts of myself and show me more than who I initially thought I could be. My mom has always been, and is continuously supportive of my passions as well! I’m very grateful for her and the rest of my family.
