Story & Lesson Highlights with Dr. Cesar Visurraga of Baltimore

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dr. Cesar Visurraga. Check out our conversation below.

Cesar , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I truly believe I am called to invent medical devices that save lives and make cutting-edge technology accessible worldwide. Back in 2011, as a student nurse anesthesiologist, I had an idea that could transform how ultrasonography is used in anesthesia care. Like many inventors, I sketched my concept and even drafted a patent application on my own.

After graduating in 2012, I sought help from a patent attorney to bring my vision to life. As a new graduate with limited funds, I reached out through a veteran collaboration network and was fortunate to find an attorney willing to meet pro bono. However, early in the process, I was discouraged—the attorney told me my idea was too complex and advised me to pursue simpler, more profitable patents instead. Hearing that, I put my idea on the back burner, disheartened by the patent process.

Years later, I learned that my original ultrasonography concept was patented by someone else and has since grown into a million-dollar publicly traded company. This experience taught me a vital lesson: in the patent world, “first to file, first to patent” is a hard truth. I let fear and uncertainty hold me back, and I paid the price.

Today, I’m fully invested in my patented device—one with the potential to save lives by improving airway management. I urge anyone with an idea to document it thoroughly, develop a prototype, and move quickly through the patent process. Don’t let fear stop you. Innovation has the power to change the world, and I’m committed to answering that call.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, I’m Dr. Cesar Jesus Visurraga, a Nurse Anesthesiologist (CRNA, DNP), former U.S. Army Captain, and CEO of Visurraga Enterprises LLC—a Veteran-Owned anesthesia staffing and services company serving across five states. I’m also the inventor of a patented medical device designed to modernize the way endotracheal tubes are placed, making airway management faster, safer, and more accessible—even outside of the traditional hospital setting.
My path started with an enlistment in the U.S. Army at 18, where I served as a critical care nurse and officer. From combat evacuations to ICU bedsides, I’ve faced high-stakes clinical situations that shaped my view on what healthcare providers truly need—especially when seconds matter. My entrepreneurial instincts were shaped both by military leadership and by watching my mother build a business from scratch as a single immigrant woman with limited English. Those experiences laid the foundation for a company that thrives under pressure and leads with purpose.
When COVID-19 struck, we expanded our services to meet urgent demand, growing from under 10 staffing contracts to serving over 50 healthcare facilities. We supported surgery centers and offices in restarting their anesthesia departments safely and effectively, deploying implementation teams, and ensuring clinicians had the resources and training to adapt.

The COVID 19 pandemic changed how we practiced anesthesia. Possibly like many providers, I felt the fear when intubating-not just for the patient, but for ourselves and families. We adapted, persevered and saved lives. The last time I felt that type of fear when intubating was in Iraq while transporting a child by vehicle to a hospital while under fire. How I wish I had access to this technology then. That fear fueled the development of a breakthrough airway device. I realized the world needed something better—a portable, integrated solution that could empower providers, improve outcomes, and be used in both routine and extreme environments.
Now, we’re on a mission to bring this patented technology to market. We’re building a platform that merges cutting-edge hardware with today’s latest technology—a solution that can assist in accurate, real-time airway management across healthcare settings.
We are currently seeking investors and strategic healthcare partners to join us as we scale this innovation into a new genre of life-saving medical tools. With the right support, we aim to make this technology available globally—equipping frontline providers, improving patient safety, and defining the next generation of intubation.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
My service during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2007 to 2009 profoundly shaped my worldview. From surviving a plane crash to dodging mortar rounds, I witnessed firsthand the fragility of life. These experiences transformed how I value the time we have with ourselves and with others. I’ve come to understand that no one is invincible—everyone has vulnerabilities. Titles and status are just constructs, and life is full of unknowns. Because of this, it’s far wiser to remain a lifelong student, open to growth and change, rather than rigidly set in one’s ways.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
Before serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom, I had a very rigid and idealistic view of morality—I believed that good people should only associate with other good people, and that those who did wrong should be kept apart. But war has a way of breaking down simple ideas. I witnessed countless shades of human behavior—moments of incredible kindness in chaos, and painful decisions made in impossible situations. Those experiences reshaped how I see the world.
I came to understand that everyone is fighting their own battles, growing in their own time, and doing what they can within the context of their lives. It taught me that compassion and empathy matter more than judgment. I’ve let go of that black-and-white mindset and now strive to lead with openness, humility, and understanding—because connection, not division, is what truly moves us forward.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
As an anesthesia provider, I’m deeply immersed in the mission of improving patient care—especially when it comes to life-saving interventions. That commitment is what drove the development of our innovative endotracheal intubation system. I firmly believe this technology represents the future of anesthesia and airway management.
Currently, advanced tools for intubation are primarily found in hospitals and in high-resource countries with larger budgets. But life-threatening emergencies aren’t limited to hospitals. Non-hospital environments—such as emergency medical services (EMS), ambulatory surgery centers, and office-based practices—often operate with tighter budgets, yet face the same critical need for precision, speed, and safety in airway management.
In the U.S. alone, around 20 million endotracheal intubations are performed annually, with an estimated 7 million occurring outside of hospitals—many by EMS and anesthesia professionals. These providers deserve access to the same level of cutting-edge technology, regardless of setting.
That’s why I’m fully committed to leading my company in bringing this advanced, life-saving solution to the clinicians who need it most—when every second counts and every airway matters.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
In 2020, in response to the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Visurraga Enterprises LLC launched a dedicated research and development department to create an affordable, cutting-edge intubation system. Today, we have developed a product designed by anesthesia providers for anesthesia providers, and we are actively seeking seed funding, investors, and strategic partnerships to scale this life-saving medical device to a broader market.
This device empowers healthcare providers to place breathing tubes safely and effectively—even in settings with limited resources.
Our mission is simple: to equip providers everywhere with the best possible tools when it matters most.
Like many medical device startups, building the capital necessary to scale this vision is a long journey—but our team of software developers and medical experts are confident that the rewards will be profound and lasting.
Currently, we are focused on attracting private equity, forming partnerships within the healthcare community, and with other investors. On August 12, 2025, we will present our device at the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) Annual Congress in Nashville, TN—a landmark event where healthcare leaders unite, network, and innovate. I strongly encourage investors to attend this pivotal meeting and witness firsthand the future of anesthesia technology.

We remain open to negotiations with prospective partners and early investors who are eager to accelerate the development and deployment of this groundbreaking solution.
