We’re looking forward to introducing you to Danielle Bowen. Check out our conversation below.
Danielle, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Who are you learning from right now?
Lately, I’ve been learning the art of listening without immediately reacting or offering advice. As someone who has long valued clear and effective communication, you’d think listening would come naturally—but I’m realizing there’s a big difference between hearing someone and simply holding space for them.
In both my personal life with young adult children and my professional role supervising young staff, I’ve found that people often don’t need immediate solutions—they need to be heard. I’m learning to pause, to not jump into problem-solving mode, and to respect that growth often happens when others find their own way.
It’s been humbling and empowering—and occasionally requires me to bite my tongue so hard I deserve an award. But I’m learning.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! I’m Danielle Bowen, part of the family behind The Blended Essentials—a creative makerspace and gift shop located in Severna Park, Maryland. We specialize in hands-on experiences where people of all ages can create custom candles, soaps, scrubs, and more. What makes us truly unique is our mission to blend creativity, community, and connections.
We proudly hire and mentor local high school students—often their first job—and work closely with individuals with disabilities through partnerships with organizations like The Providence Center. We collaborate with local artists and nonprofits, host inclusive events, and offer science-based classes for homeschoolers.
In addition to our in-store experiences, we develop customized products for businesses—including signature candles for Vaccaro’s, a beloved Italian restaurant and bakery in Baltimore, and specialty shampoo and conditioners for the Social Barber.
We offer a welcoming place for everyone to connect, create, and feel inspired. The Blended Essentials isn’t just a shop—it’s a place where stories, creations, and people come together in meaningful ways!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One of my earliest memories of feeling powerful was as a young adult running city summer programs for at-risk youth. I naturally stepped into leadership roles, first managing a single school site and eventually overseeing district-wide programs. What fueled me was the connection we built with children and the tangible, positive impact we were making.
That passion led me to become the state ambassador for afterschool programming, where I had the opportunity to advocate for change—not just locally, but at the federal level. I helped lead efforts to secure funding and influence legislation to improve access and quality in youth programs across the state. It was the first time I realized how leadership, purpose, and policy could intersect to truly empower others.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me something success never could—that time is truly our most valuable gift. I lost my mom, my best friend, to cancer. She was still so full of life—healthy in every way except for the illness that took her. Watching someone you love want more time, and not get it, changes you.
I’ve always worked hard and poured myself into my goals, believing in the idea of “work hard, play hard.” But loss has taught me that no amount of achievement will ever be more important than the time we spend with the people we love. My family is my success. Everything else is just what I do to support what matters most.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my closest friends would say that what matters most to me is showing up for others—really being present. Whether it’s my family, my staff, or the community I serve, they’d tell you I care deeply about people feeling seen, supported, and valued.
They’d probably also say I’m passionate about creating spaces—whether at work, at home, or in the community—where people feel safe to be themselves, to grow, and to connect. Oh, and they’d definitely mention that I love a good project, a little chaos, and that I don’t sit still for long—but I always make time for what really matters.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I could go back 10 years, I would tell myself to stop overthinking what other people think—and to stop carrying the emotional weight of everyone else’s feelings. I’ve learned that trying to manage how others feel or perceive you only keeps you stuck. Letting that go has been one of the most freeing and empowering things I’ve done for myself—though I’m still very much working on mastering it!
