Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoila Millan
Hi Zoila, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The love for nail art began several years ago, when I was in El Salvador, but there I did not have the means or a school nearby to be able to develop this art.
I took my first nail school program in October 2020, during the pandemic and that’s where it all began…
I always say that God has put the best people on my path who have supported me from scratch.
I remember that when I finished my first nail classes, one of my friends told me “Do my nails please” and I did them for her (they didn’t turn out pretty) and she was very happy and said that she liked them and a week later she sent her cousin to me to do her nails, and then all my friends volunteered as my models to practice.
I always continued studying and taking classes to improve but I also had my full time job in a restaurant as part of the support staff.
In August 2022 I finished classes at the Maryland Institute of Nails Technician so I could get my license as a nail technician.
I had my first salon at home and then in September 2023 we opened Zoimy Nails Studio in a small but cozy place. One year later, in June 2024 we opened a new, larger space, with more services but the same warmth and quality.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been easy at all
When you begin the process of starting a business you encounter many obstacles.
The biggest obstacle of all for me has been the language, learn English, take classes and, above all, lose the fear of speaking it.
For any woman who wants to start her own business is very difficult to run a house, children, work, study and try to continue with your business.
It is also difficult the first few months to get clients or new people who trust your work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Before starting in the nail business, I worked for almost 6 years for a restaurant chain called ¨Atlas Restaurant Group¨ I worked for a couple of their properties, Tagliata, Monarque and The Oregon Grille,I worked as a Busser. In 2019 I also worked with attorney Lara Wilkinson (immigration attorney), I worked with her for 1 year while doing nails in the afternoon.
It is a challenge every day for someone who has a business, to get clients and do something different so that your clients stay loyal to you and happy with your work.
I try to focus on offering a different service to traditional salons, 3D designs which is my specialty and encapsulated these are designs that are almost not used in traditional salons.
At Zoimy Nails Studio every single client is special, that is why I work through appointments since I try to give my best so that each client takes the necessary time to choose the design, color and style with which they feel best.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Every day I work with a new client they always tell me that I can read the ideas they have about the designs they want on their nails, since every time I finish doing their nails they always tell me that the final result is exactly how they had imagined it, and I think this does not happen in every Nail Salon.
