Rising Stars: Meet Yana Kharkova of Baltimore County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yana Kharkova

Hi Yana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Kazakhstan and growing up I was always drawn to the arts and creative fields. Naturally, this meant I pursued… an economics degree. (Because, you know, that’s what you do when your mom insists on a “real career.”) Fast forward to a decade of working hard in the U.S. in a 9-to-5 job while keeping photography as my side passion, I had a lightbulb moment: Why not make my passion my career?

Taking the leap wasn’t easy—trading spreadsheets for wedding shoots felt like jumping off a cliff with a camera instead of a parachute. But here I am, a full-time wedding photographer who loves capturing everything from romantic “I dos” to quirky creative shoots, portraits, landscapes or architecture. It’s been the most rewarding risk I’ve ever taken.

Every day I get to turn fleeting moments into memories, and honestly, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’d say it’s been a mix of smooth stretches and bumpy detours! I consider myself incredibly lucky to have met amazing people who guided and supported me along the way. But if I’m honest, the biggest hurdle wasn’t external—it was believing in myself and my art. There’s nothing like staring at your own work and thinking, “Is this good enough?”

Beyond that, it’s been a journey of constant learning—about photography, business, and even about myself. Every challenge has been a chance to grow, and looking back, even the toughest days were worth it for the moments I get to capture now.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I hope my love for the art shines through in everything I do. Yes, I’m a wedding photographer, but that title means so much more—it’s being a portrait artist, a food stylist, an event documentarian, and a storyteller all rolled into one. The beauty of weddings is that they challenge you to master all these skills without skipping a beat, and I love rising to that challenge.

In my free time, I like to switch things up and work with models or couples to explore emotions and moods. Playing with light, crafting unique concepts, and seeing an idea come to life is incredibly rewarding. What sets me apart? Maybe it’s my drive to push boundaries while staying true to capturing authentic moments. That, and the fact that I’m constantly chasing ways to turn emotions into timeless images.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think the question on everyone’s mind right now is AI—what does it mean for the future of photography? Personally, I’m optimistic. Sure, the ability to create any image in minutes without leaving your home is exciting (and maybe a little daunting), but I see it as an opportunity to elevate our art. It’s a challenge to embrace new tools while staying true to ourselves and our unique way of capturing real moments and emotions.

At the end of the day, having a vision will always be the key to creating a truly great image. Technology can assist, but it can’t replace the soul, creativity, and connection that come from human artistry.
