Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Martel.
Whitney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
A chance knee injury led me to finally have the courage to pursue my dream of opening my own full-service interior design firm. While I had always been interested in interior design, it took a stroke of bad luck to finally pursue it. Funny how life works….
Looking back on my previous career, there had always been elements of design and it all prepared me for my career in interior design today. I have over 15 years of experience in New York City and Washington DC working for various Luxury Jewelry Brands and Home Decor Brands. Eventually, I moved back to my hometown of Baltimore Maryland, where I managed a staging and renovations team for a Real Estate Company, this further ignited my passion for interiors. Working in renovations led to many interior design jobs.
Fast forward to more recently, my chance knee injury led to surgery, and months of recovery and honestly probably more couch time than I’d prefer. It was during my recover and that I finally had the epiphany, “What are you waiting for!” And decided to go for my dream by launching Whitney Martel Interiors. And the rest is history (wink!)
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe we need challenges in our lives to make it interesting and further our growth. There are always obstacles along the way and we are always learning. From opening a business to bookkeeping, and often navigating a new path when things don’t go as planned, are all some of the things I’ve learned over the years.
One of my struggles is that I’m a very social person and I really miss the friendships you make with coworkers that you get in a larger company. I’m lucky that I have made some really amazing friendships with other interior designers in Baltimore and they’ve basically become my coworkers. That said, I still miss those water cooler chats!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Whitney Martel Interiors is a full-service design firm serving clients in Towson and the surrounding Baltimore areas. I best describe my styles as clean soft lines with pops of color, pattern, and texture. Most of my clients are families with kids, so beauty and function are critical and usually equally important. Whitney Martel Interiors specializes in renovation, space planning, and full-service room design. Whether the customer is renovating a house, building an addition, or just needs help with decorating their home, Whitney Martel is happy to help.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for those just starting out is to go for it. For a long time, life held me back from going after my dreams. I think we all fear the unknown, but sometimes we need to step back and look at things from a different perspective, what if we succeed and what if we achieve our dreams? What does that look like?
My other piece of advice is to be hungry, ask questions, gain experience and get involved in every aspect of the business. You never know where these experiences will lead. I have found that when you get involved, you evolve and eventually wind up where you wanted to be even it’s not necessarily the route you had predicted.
