Today we’d like to introduce you to Unique Lassiter.
Hi Unique, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my lash career in 2016 while working a full-time job at Comcast, now known as Xfinity. At the time, I was working from 12–9 while also being a mom, and I knew I wanted something different for my life. I wanted more time with my daughter, more financial freedom, and most importantly, the freedom to create a life on my own terms.
I fell in love with lashing, but with my work schedule, it was difficult to take clients consistently and truly give my business the attention I knew it deserved. So in 2017, I made a major decision, I left Xfinity, opened a daycare in my basement, and started taking lash clients right out of my living room.
Things began moving quickly from there. My clientele grew, I eventually moved into my own suite, continued investing in lash education, and stepped into teaching. Once I started educating, my career took off in a way I could have never imagined.
I had students flying in from different states just to train with me. I hosted a lash seminar with 50 women from across the country, and I went on a 10-city lash tour where I taught two classes every other weekend. I was booked, busy, traveling, teaching, taking clients, and building a name for myself in the industry.
But no matter how successful I became, I never allowed myself to believe I knew everything. Education has always been extremely important to me. I traveled to Las Vegas, Atlanta, and even Canada to take master classes and learn from other educators in areas where I wanted to improve. I truly believe that if you want to be great at what you do, you can never stop being a student.
Over the years, I’ve experienced so many different sides of the beauty industry. I’ve owned lash spaces where other lash artists and beauty professionals rented booths from me. I even moved to Atlanta and hosted an event during my very first week there that brought out more than 80 women.
From the outside, it may sound like everything was always successful, but that’s only part of my story.
There were also seasons when I wanted to give up. There were times when my clientele slowed down, my classes weren’t filling the way they once did, and I struggled personally. I went through periods of depression, and it affected how I showed up for myself and my business.
But the one thing I can say is that I never truly gave up.
I’ve had to reset. I’ve had to rebuild. I’ve had to start over more than once. And every time I did, I came back with more knowledge, more experience, and a better understanding of who I am and what I want my business to represent.
Now, after 10 years in the lash industry, I’m entering a new chapter. I’m rebranding and putting more of my focus into education, mentorship, and growing my product line.
At this stage in my career, I want to take everything I’ve learned, the wins, the mistakes, the setbacks, the lessons, and the experiences, and use it to help the next generation of lash artists.
I know what it feels like to be the beginner who doesn’t have all the answers. I know what it feels like to be booked and thriving, and I also know what it feels like when business slows down and you begin questioning yourself. I’ve experienced both sides, and I believe that’s what allows me to mentor from a real place of experience.
I want upcoming lash artists to know that success isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes you have to pivot. Sometimes you have to start over. Sometimes you have to rediscover your passion and remind yourself why you started in the first place.
My journey has taught me that starting over doesn’t mean you failed, it can simply mean you’re making room for something greater.
Ten years later, I’m still here, still learning, still evolving, and still dreaming. Now my goal is to be the helping hand I wish I had along the way, to teach the good, be transparent about the hard parts, and remind other lash artists that no matter what season they’re in, they should never stop believing in what they can become.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
t definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. My journey has had some incredible highs, but it has also come with some really difficult seasons that tested me both personally and professionally.
There were times when my clientele slowed down, my classes weren’t filling the way they once did, and I started questioning myself and everything I had built. I went through periods where I struggled mentally and lost some of the motivation and confidence I once had. When you’re used to being booked, busy, traveling, and teaching, it can be hard to accept when things suddenly begin to change.
One of the hardest moments for me was when I moved to Atlanta. I went there with big expectations for myself and my business. I even hosted an event my first week there that brought out over 80 women, so I truly felt like I was stepping into the next level of my career. But after that, things didn’t go the way I had planned.
When everything started going wrong, I felt like I had failed. Eventually, I made the decision to move back home to Baltimore, and honestly, I was embarrassed. I had built this image of myself as someone who was successful and always making big moves, so coming back home felt like I had to admit that something didn’t work out.
For months, I didn’t even let people know I was back in Baltimore because I was so embarrassed. Looking back, I realize I was putting so much pressure on myself because I was worried about how other people would view me. I thought starting over meant I had failed, when in reality, I was simply going through a transition.
That experience humbled me and taught me one of the biggest lessons of my career is everything that doesn’t work out isn’t a failure.
I’ve had to reset and rebuild more than once throughout my 10 years in this industry. There were moments when I wanted to give up completely, but I never allowed myself to stay down. Every time I started over, I came back with more experience, more knowledge, and a clearer understanding of what I wanted.
Now, I’m actually grateful for those difficult seasons because they gave me a story that’s bigger than just being booked and successful. They taught me resilience. They taught me how to rebuild. And most importantly, they gave me the ability to relate to the lash artists I want to mentor today.
I can tell someone from experience that your business slowing down doesn’t mean your career is over. Having to move back home doesn’t make you a failure. Starting over doesn’t erase everything you accomplished before.
Sometimes starting over is exactly what prepares you for your next chapter.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a lash artist, educator, mentor, and beauty entrepreneur with 10 years of experience in the lash industry. I specialize in advanced lash styling, particularly creating customized wispy sets that are designed around each client’s unique eye shape, facial features, and overall look. For me, lashing has never been about giving every client the same set, it’s about understanding how to create a look that truly complements the person sitting in front of me.
Over the years, I’ve also developed a passion for education. Teaching has become such an important part of what I do because I remember what it felt like to take classes early in my career and leave still feeling confused or unsure of myself. Because of that, I’ve always wanted my students to walk away with more than just a certificate. I want them to leave with knowledge they actually understand, techniques they can confidently execute, and the ability to create beautiful work on their own.
I think what I’m most known for is my artistry, my attention to detail, and my willingness to share what I know. I don’t believe in gatekeeping information. If I’ve learned something throughout my 10 years in this industry that can help another artist become better, more confident, or avoid some of the mistakes I made, I want to teach it.
What I’m most proud of is the impact I’ve been able to have beyond my own clientele. I’ve had students travel from different states to train with me, hosted a seminar for 50 women from across the country, completed a 10-city teaching tour, and created spaces where other beauty professionals could build their businesses as well. Knowing that something I started in my living room grew into opportunities that allowed me to educate and inspire women from different places is something I’ll always be proud of.
What sets me apart is that I’m not teaching from a place of perfection, I’m teaching from experience. I’ve experienced the booked-and-busy seasons, the successful classes and events, and the exciting opportunities, but I’ve also experienced slow seasons, self-doubt, rebuilding, and starting over. I understand both sides of entrepreneurship.
Now, as I enter this next chapter of my career, my focus is on education, mentorship, and growing my product line through Luxe Beauty Artistry. I want to create resources, products, and learning experiences that help lash artists strengthen their artistry while also becoming more confident in themselves and their businesses.
After 10 years, I’m proud that I’m still passionate enough to keep learning and humble enough to know there’s always more to learn. I don’t just want to be known for creating beautiful lashes, I want to be known for helping create great lash artists.
