Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Wright.
Hi Nicholas, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Nicholas ‘NickTheKidd’ Wright, I’m from PG County, MD; and I’m a model and an artist.
I started modeling as a way to get my male friends comfortable and secure enough in themselves to be my muses in front of the camera.
At a time when young black men didn’t typically take pictures for fun or self-expression; I needed my subjects to see the other side, so I led by example. Here I am, years later; still in front of the camera. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Although not particularly “smooth”. The path I’ve chosen has come with A LOT of “No’s”, from conceptual ideas to collaborations, and even reaching out to agencies and being turned down.
All of which taught me resilience and determination, ultimately resulting in my ambition being that much stronger to see the no’s as an opportunity for greater experiences and better work to come.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an all-around artist & workhorse. A true example of a multidisciplinary artist, from being behind the camera as a photographer, videographer, director/creative director, to in front of the lens as a model and even a stylist.
From hand-tufted rugs to abstract spray painting, & even a seasonal side business: making scented candles. I can’t sit still, I have to create. I’m always ready to work and help make a vision come to life. I love putting on clothes, men’s & women’s; I play dress up for fun and each day my multiple personalities get to express themselves one by one, fit after fit.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting.
Discipline and consistency, are what will set you and your art/self-expression apart. Staying true to yourself and your vision will always feel better than compromising on the thought of someone else and/or how they may feel about your choice of expression.
