Today we’d like to introduce you to Myqueen Dickens.
Hi Myqueen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Myqueen Dickens I’m a 27-year-old travel Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse. I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago by a single mom of 3. My mother instilled many values into my siblings and I that were surrounded by individuality, goal orientation, and a hustle mentality.
I attended an HBCU “Kentucky State University” where I obtained my associate’s and bachelor’s in nursing. Throughout my nursing career, I noticed there was a gap in resources for nurses of color and the healthcare field lacked diversity. While treading through my journey, I faced trials and learned many lessons that I now share with my growing audience on social media.
Through my YouTube channel “Central Line with Nurse Queen”, Instagram, and social media accounts I share my journey while providing aspiring nurses and travel nurses with tips to help their transition be smoother. I also sell seasonal merchandise for nurses, aspiring nurses, and travel nurses. After 13 travel assignments, I’ve finally chosen the DMV to call home. What tied me to the DMV area was the culture and progression. Also, a plus was that majority of everyone looked like me.
Lastly, I’m currently in school to become a Certified Nurse Midwife. My main reason for continuing my nursing education is to dismantle the racial disparities associated with black women and infants.
Documenting my journey through content via YouTube, Instagram, and social media I hope to inspire, connect, and bridge the gap for nurses of color.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the road hasn’t been smooth.
Many times, throughout my journey, I’ve been the only black nurse on the unit. Although it didn’t hinder my progression, I recognized the gap and wanted to see a change. The merchandise I sell has shirts and crewnecks highlighting historical black nurses. Highlighting those that has come before us and recognizing the lack of diversity, is a start to change.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a travel labor and delivery registered nurse. I currently am a travel nurse, YouTube, content creator, nurse coach and I sell nurse merchandise.
I’m mainly known for my Instagram presence in the nursing community where I share my journey and trials within nursing. I’m most proud of becoming a registered nurse at 20 years old. What sets me apart from others is my authenticity. I share my journey raw and uncut.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
My sister and I recently launched a concierge IV hydration business named Royal Renewal Wellness Spa and it will cater to the D.C. area. Royal Renewal Wellness Spa is a mobile wellness spa catering to the multifaceted individual. We plan to bridge the gap between wellness and luxury.
Although this new venture is major shift, we’ve always planned to use nursing as a steppingstone into creating generational wealth. The next 5-10 years, I’m assured our business will flourish and create many opportunities for other nurses and the community of the DMV area.
