Rising Stars: Meet Michelle Harf-Grim of Hunt Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Harf-Grim.

Hi Michelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Baltimore, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a loving and affectionate family that always supported my dreams. All I knew growing up was that I wanted to become involved in my local community to help others and give back. I initially explored the idea of being a social worker or lawyer because both would provide a way to give back while solving problems. Ultimately, I worked to become a financial advisor, still providing answers and solutions but in a different way. As an advisor, I am able to help individuals and families plan for some of the largest, most important events in their lives. These include some of life’s biggest milestones including starting a family, buying a home, saving for college, retirement planning and losing a loved one. For the past 32 years, I have been right there, partnering with my clients through every step of their financial lives. I never take this responsibility for granted. I have also made it my mission to be a resource for women who are going through a transition in their lives. Many of my clients are now widows and look to me for guidance and can turn to me as their sounding board. An individual can potentially be the most vulnerable when they are experiencing an emotional transition, and my goal is to help them and provide direction, so they avoid pitfalls while accomplishing their biggest financial goals.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In addition to being a financial advisor, I am a wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend, volunteer and active community member. Juggling the daily responsibilities that come with those roles can sometimes be a challenge. I often remind myself the advice I provide to my clients about prioritizing goals and time management. I also give myself grace when things take time to put in place and bring together. Just as I help my clients balance a myriad of financial goals, I too balance many roles in my life that are important to me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My goal is to continue my work of helping others navigate their most significant life events through personalized financial planning and advice. I will also continue my close work with women investors as they navigate life’s challenges and their financial implications. Lastly, my focus will include my own family, including my three children who have grown into incredible young adults. Together, we will continue our community involvement by sharing the importance of giving back, family, empathy, and kindness—particularly through volunteering with Rachel’s Bears, an organization that brings comfort and cheer to children receiving care in hospitals by donating books and teddy bears.
