Marta Ali

Hi Marta, thanks for joining us today. Can you share your journey of uniting people from diverse backgrounds through unique Ethiopian Coffee Ceremonies?

The story I share with you is a captivating chapter on how the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony found its prominent place in the vibrant communities of the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., and its surrounding regions. Indeed, the popularity of the ceremony is a collective effort of dedicated members of the diaspora community. My journey with this tradition began in my childhood when I grew up watching and participating in the cherished coffee ceremony with my family in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Since Ethiopia is known to be the birthplace of Coffee, this story was deeply rooted in my upbringing , and the coffee ceremony, which most households hosted, especially for holidays and family gatherings, still hold a special place in my heart , a rich experience steeped in art, culture, architecture, fashion, and hospitality. However, upon moving to the United States, I found a notable absence of this beloved tradition in the bustling communities of the DMV areas specially where most Ethiopian diaspora communities resided. It seemed, here in the U.S. the fast-paced modern life overshadowed the slower pace and daily rituals I had known, leaving me and other Ethiopians in the diaspora longing to create a touch of home to our new homeland.

Especially after completing college in the US, my passion for rediscovering my heritage and celebrating rich cultural traditions grew stronger. Eventually, I started collaborating with community leaders in the diaspora and hosting large-scale cultural celebrations. Together, we began incorporating the unique Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, bringing diverse communities and fostering meaningful relationships.

Inspired by my background in architecture design, I also began envisioning how the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony could evolve beyond some of the preservation efforts that were happening. This vision led me to develop Empress Ethiopian Coffee, a creative initiative that started around 2016. The idea is mostly for Empress Ethiopian Coffee to curate a modern-day interpretation of the ceremony that embraces new technologies yet pays homage to the cherished tradition. Since then, the Empress Ethiopian coffee ceremony has engaged and captivated thousands of attendees with its traditional yet modern settings, exotic aromatic coffee brews, and storytelling at memorable social gatherings that bring together attendees from diverse nations.

Thus far, we have focused on participating in cultural events, art exhibitions, weddings, city-wide initiatives, etc. We continue to welcome partnerships with like-minded individuals and organizations to share the unique Ethiopian coffee experience with many who have yet to discover it. Looking ahead, I am filled with enthusiasm for what the future holds and inspired to transform this program into a more immersive experience, honoring Ethiopian heritage while embracing forward-thinking.

Also eager to welcome everyone from all walks of life to bond over a shared love for coffee, art, and creative culture. I hope you can join us at future events to create unforgettable moments together, sipping one cup of Ethiopian coffee at a time.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

Introducing the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony to a new cultural context in the USA has been deeply rewarding and occasionally challenging. Bringing this cherished tradition from its intimate Ethiopian household setting to large public events in a modern part of the world requires careful attention to cultural, logistical, culinary, and operational factors which are often overlooked.

Adapting the ceremony to accommodate larger groups while maintaining authenticity involves meticulous planning and coordination. This includes upholding the ceremony’s cultural significance while creating the perfect atmosphere with the right ambiance, playing traditional music, making expertly brewed coffee, and creating a thoughtful presentation. Every detail in an Ethiopian coffee ceremony must be carefully considered to give guests a memorable experience.

Exploring coffee as a culinary art form also presented an unexpected challenge at the beginning since the techniques used for small gatherings versus large events required some rethinking to develop a new approach. Thankfully, mastering the art of making exceptional coffee for large audiences has now earning us praise for providing what event attendees describe as the best coffee they’ve ever tasted. This recognition is particularly meaningful given the high expectation for Ethiopians to craft the finest coffee ever. Ensuring culinary excellence not only enhances our events but also serves as a foundation for fostering cross-cultural understanding and creating new meaningful connections.

Bringing this tradition into a modern cultural context also introduced other factors, such as access to the right Ethiopian coffee display platforms, decor, and cultural artifacts. These challenges are especially significant when hosting high-profile events where the experience needs to be elevated. Fortunately, my architecture and custom fabrication background have allowed me to create upscale versions of traditional Ethiopian artifacts in Baltimore, enhancing the ceremony and paving the way for a more sophisticated experience that resonates with modern sensibilities. Thus far, it’s encouraging to see increased dialogue about the intersection of coffee, art, culture, and architecture during our events.

The journey of evolving the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony into a modern-day experience requires a continuous balance of sensitivity, creativity, and adaptability. Ultimately, my vision is to continue to help bridge cultural differences and forge meaningful connections through the shared experiences and hospitality, it will continue to be a fulfilling and rewarding experience.
