Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Pinkney.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Malik “Coach” Pinkney is a broadcaster, media executive, musician, and community builder whose career spans traditional radio, satellite broadcasting, digital streaming, podcasting, and TikTok LIVE. He has produced and hosted two #1-rated radio shows in the Washington, D.C. market, serves as a Sports Broadcast Supervisor at SiriusXM, co created WDMV The Stream during the Coronavirus outbreak and shutdown, and helps lead the TikTok Community named Earbud Nation.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think working in any industry over 20 years. They’re gonna be some bumps in a row. I have definitely had my share. It’s tough coming into an industry and you’re the youngest amongst all of these career people. It’s also pretty tough when you’re trying to breakthrough in your own hometown. You struggle sometimes with people who’ve watch you grow up, but don’t necessarily believe in what you’re doing. You struggle with people’s perception of what they think a person should be and what they offer. Starting at the age of 17 I had to put in a lot of time just to prove myself worthy of the opportunity. It was a lot of long days late nights early mornings. Some nights we slept on the floor at the radio station. It was all a part of the journey.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I can consider myself to be a jack of all trades in broadcasting and community outreach. I help create and manage live programming, live online streaming and community engagement. I have been trained in media production and media project management. Through these different skills, I have been able to create a community of people who comes from all walks of life and backgrounds. Some who are career professionals and other community activists. I have also been able to bring together a large group of colleagues that consist of DJs and content creators to produce live content and build brands.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If I was to have any advice for anybody starting now is to never lose yourself. Work hard even when it’s not even time to work. Be a sponge for information and truly understand your purpose on the platform. Be yourself.
