Rising Stars: Meet Madison King of Washington, DC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison King.

Hi Madison, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a native Washingtonian whose layered experiences have deeply shaped my perspective and the work I do. My collegiate journey began at the U.S. Naval Academy before I pivoted and completed my undergraduate studies at The George Washington University, earning a degree in Africana Studies with a minor in Spanish and Latin American Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Through this field, I developed a strong appreciation for art, culture, and community, interests that continue to guide my path. Working at Studio Gallery has been a meaningful opportunity to bring those passions together, allowing me to connect creativity, community engagement, and storytelling in one space.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Finding my space in the art world came with its own set of challenges, especially as I navigated paths that weren’t entirely traditional. There’s been a lot of learning along the way, but each experience has helped me grow and better understand how I want to contribute to the creative community.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As the Gallery Director at Studio Gallery, I oversee artist management, ensuring the smooth functioning of our artist-owned cooperative. My responsibilities include marketing and scheduling, art handling, and daily operations, all while striving for seamless coordination to allow artists to focus on their creative pursuits. What sets me apart is my visionary approach and ability to understand how individual efforts contribute to the cooperative’s overall success. I am particularly proud of our annual outreach shows, which provide non-artist members with a chance to showcase their work for three and a half weeks, fostering deeper connections within our community.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
One piece of advice I would give to those just beginning their journey in the art world is to maintain a curious mindset and be open to learning from every experience. The art world can initially seem overwhelming, especially if you’re exploring unconventional paths. I wish I had known earlier that building relationships and embracing collaboration are equally crucial as honing your technical skills. Take the time to actively listen, ask questions, and seek mentors. These connections can open doors and foster your growth in ways you can’t anticipate. Also, authenticity is key.
