Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Brown.
Hi Kim, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been passionate about style and design for as long as I can remember. I wasn’t sure how to make a career out of this passion as a teenager and didn’t know anyone who could guide me. I am a first-generation American in my family, and we’ve always been encouraged to pursue career paths that would be sure bets for supporting ourselves well. So although I had little passion for practicing law, I attended law school and became an attorney. I started out working for national banks and still do to this day. Along came the pandemic, working from home, and much more time to think about and revisit the passion that has never left me. I decided in May of 2020 to pursue a lifestyle (primarily style) blog on Instagram to share my suggestions for women around the age of 40 and up on how to be stylish, comfortable and confident. I am a wife, mom to two amazing girls and work. Many women with similar responsibilities may feel that personal style should not be a priority, but I believe that when you feel good in the clothes, shoes and perfume you’re wearing, it adds a boost to how we feel that day. This too is self-care and should be a priority! Although I’m only about a year into my documented style journey, I’m excited by all of the acquaintances I’ve made locally and internationally and that my recommendations have been helpful. I’m planning to have a presence on other social platforms soon.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road as I am juggling multiple responsibilities. At times my photoshoots mean I’m spending precious weekend time away from my family. My husband is incredibly supportive and covers the home when I’m away prepping for and doing photo shoots, but I do miss them during these times and hope that my daughters will understand what mommy is trying to develop.
Another struggle is growth. There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into creating the content that is seen on socials and at times, it can feel a bit overwhelming when there is so much focus on numbers. But in the end, I am very passionate about showing women like me ways that we can look good and feel good and still take care of our myriad of responsibilities so I do actually enjoy this very much.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a lifestyle blogger based in Baltimore and known on social media as Workslayplay. The name was born of my belief that women can and should “slay” while they work and play! My primary focus is daily style recommendations for women who desire tips on how to elevate their daily looks, feel stylish and still be comfortable. I also share local business experiences and soon will incorporate travel experiences and recommendations. While the content I share appeals to women in their late 30s and up as I focus on looks that are chic but elegant and mature, I think developing personal style is for everyone.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Having a public profile that may be viewed by anyone, anywhere in the world was a risk I considered prior to pursuing this journey. There are certain precautions I take and will continue to maintain a certain level of privacy but this comes with the territory of achieving a successful blog that is helpful so I’ve gotten comfortable with this.
I would love to be able to fully focus my attention on my creative process but I’m not at a stage where I would leave behind my current career now that I have a family to consider.
