Rising Stars: Meet J.J. McQueen of Baltimore

Today we’d like to introduce you to J.j. McQueen

Hi J.J., can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in 2000 as a freelance videographer. I’ve spent decades working to build my skills in a way that helps me standout in unique ways.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth. Working to in a field where African-American photographers are easily overlooked has its challenges. Building trust in areas where traditionally we haven’t always been welcomed, striving to independently keep up with the tech trends, and maintaining momentum and fostering positive relationships all have been tough. However, even with those obstacles the journey has been worth fighting through the highs and lows.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in being a Visual media journalist. A photographer the tells stories through images. I’m most proud of how people respond to my willingness to make connections within my work to the audience. I believe what sets me apart from others is being ok with taking risks in how I frame subjects.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is when my father hid me in the sleeper of his cab of his 18 wheeler. He had a short trip one night and road with him. Looking out over the open road made me feel like I was giant.
