Rising Stars: Meet DJ Loso

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Loso.

Hi DJ Loso, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started my DJ career in 2010 when I was a freshman at UMBC. Back then, I was a new student looking for a way to connect with others and make a difference on campus. I figured music would be the perfect way to unite with people who shared interests similar to mine, especially since there weren’t many people playing the kind of music I listened to.

With this in mind, I began DJ’ing small parties in my dorm room, which led to larger parties at the campus ballroom and even a headline concert opportunity. 12 years and hundreds of gigs later, here I am. I now mostly do weddings and private parties, but I still enjoy the wild turn-up every now and then. It has certainly been an amazing ride so far but the best part is there’s a lot more to go!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. They say the road to success is paved with failures, some of them more pronounced than others. I recall when I first started DJ’ing, my dream was to become a well-known DJ on the local radio station. I did everything in my power to make happen – I reached out to all the radio personalities on social media, sent in mixtapes, pestered music directors, and frequently attended local radio events.

I even followed well-known DJs from club to club just hoping they would notice me and give me a shot. Unfortunately, none of it worked. This caused me to pivot and change my strategy from trying to fit in to carving my own lane. I began to do what felt more natural, which was tapping into my roots and helping to usher in a new wave of music (at that time) called Afrobeats. As a second-generation Nigerian, this felt like the perfect next step in my DJ career which was foundational to where I am today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a DJ. My tagline “versatility at its finest” embodies what I specialize in – VERSATILITY. My style is an eclectic mix of Hip-Hop, R&B, Afrobeats, Reggae, Pop, Baltimore Club music, and Go-go. One minute you might find me deep in my Snoop Dogg or Tupac catalog, then the next you could find yourself feeling good with Ed Sheeran before finally hopping on a jet to Nigeria where you’ll hear the latest afrobeat from Burna Boy or Wizkid.

I’m most proud of my ability to effortlessly blend all genres so no one feels excluded at my events. I am also proud of the large collection of music and equipment I’ve amassed over all these years. Nowadays, there really isn’t an event size or type that I can’t handle.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
My biggest takeaway from the Covid-19 crisis was to never stop finding new ways to connect with your audience! Although there were no events during the early stages of the pandemic, I would still find ways to engage my audience and unite people through the power of music.

I would host weekly Instagram live DJ sessions, which connected me to an audience that was larger than what I could reach in person. I learned to leverage the benefits of technology/social media to grow my brand beyond my immediate reach. I realized connecting with people was my ultimate goal, so I began experimenting with new ways to achieve the same result despite not seeing people face to face.
