Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Quenum.
Hi Chelsea, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
For most of my career, I worked in strategic communications in the nonprofit sector. I loved the meaning behind the work and the pace of building something larger than yourself but over time, I felt a quiet pull toward a different kind of calling: one that made space for creativity, deep connection, and a life rhythm that kept my family close.
Weddings became that bridge. After my own wedding in 2020, an experience that was joyful and genuinely peaceful because we had a vendor team we trusted, I couldn’t stop thinking about what a gift it is when a couple feels fully supported. In 2021, I began planning weddings alongside my full-time role, learning through real celebrations and real logistics: managing timelines, guiding decisions, holding the details, and staying steady when emotions run high.
In January 2025, I made the leap to pursue wedding planning full-time and officially launched Chelsea Quenum Wedding Planning & Event Design. Today, I serve couples across Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Charlottesville with an approach that blends thoughtful design, project management, and a calm, confident presence. I’m drawn to celebrations that feel elevated yet deeply human – where guests feel cared for, the day unfolds seamlessly, and the couple can stay present and enjoy what they’ve planned.
What’s brought me here is a love for beauty that’s intentional, a deep respect for marriage, and the belief that the planning process can feel just as meaningful as the day itself, when you have the right support. I’m grateful for the couples who trust me, and for the creative community I get to collaborate with as I continue building a business rooted in grace, excellence, and joyful connection.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been perfectly smooth but it’s been meaningful. One of the biggest challenges was building a business while also honoring the realities of my season of life. As a mom, I’ve had to build with intention; creating systems that support my clients beautifully while also protecting the rhythm of my home. Stepping away from a long-term communications career meant learning a new kind of risk: trusting my skill set, trusting the process, and allowing growth to be gradual rather than immediate.
On a practical level, wedding planning requires both creativity and operational excellence, and the learning curve can be intense. There’s the constant work of refining systems, building a trusted vendor network, pricing sustainably, and staying organized across many moving parts, all while delivering a calm, high-touch experience for clients. Early on, I also had to become comfortable with visibility: being consistent online, putting my work out there, and learning how to communicate my value with clarity.
And then there’s the emotional side – this work is deeply personal. You’re holding people’s expectations, family dynamics, and high stakes moments. I’ve had to grow in boundaries, leadership, and staying steady under pressure.
The upside is that every challenge has sharpened my approach. I’m more confident now in my process, my voice, and the kind of weddings, and couples, I’m called to serve. It hasn’t been smooth, but it has been full of growth.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a wedding planner and event designer serving couples across Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Charlottesville. My work sits at the intersection of thoughtful design and incredibly organized execution. I help couples take a vision – sometimes fully formed, sometimes still evolving – and translate it into a celebration that feels beautiful, seamless, and deeply personal.
I specialize in full-service planning, design and wedding day management, particularly for couples who want an elevated experience without feeling overwhelmed by endless options. I’m known for bringing calm to high-stakes moments, guiding decisions with clarity, and handling challenges with grace so my clients can feel at ease throughout the planning process and fully present on the wedding day. Design-wise, I’m drawn to layered, intentional details. I love pattern, color, texture, and a sense of story, while always keeping the guest experience in mind.
What I’m most proud of is the experience I create for my couples. The weddings themselves are meaningful, but what matters most to me is that the process feels steady and supported. My goal is that my clients feel cared for, informed, and never alone in the decision making process. I want the planning season to be just as joyful and grounded as the day they’ve been dreaming of.
What sets me apart is that I lead with both emotional intelligence and strong systems. I bring a background in communications and project management, which means I’m proactive, clear, and strategic behind the scenes but I also understand the heart of what a wedding carries: family dynamics, expectations, and the significance of the commitment being made. My clients often tell me they feel calmer after a conversation with me, because I’m not just managing details…I’m creating space for peace, connection, and celebration.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t really think in terms of luck. I’m a woman of faith, so I tend to see the “right place, right time” moments less as luck and more as providence – and at the same time, I believe we’re called to be good stewards of what’s been entrusted to us.
There have absolutely been doors that opened in ways I couldn’t have orchestrated…connections, referrals, opportunities, and encouragement at just the right moment. I’m deeply grateful for those. But I’ve also learned that stewardship matters just as much: showing up consistently, refining my systems, building strong relationships, and doing excellent work when no one is watching. In my experience, those are the things that create long-term trust and growth.
And in the hard seasons, when things have moved more slowly than I wanted or plans didn’t unfold the way I expected, I’ve come to see how much those moments have shaped me. They clarified what I’m called to build and strengthened the qualities that matter most in my work: patience, resilience, and the ability to lead with calm and grace under pressure.
So while I don’t credit luck for my path, I do believe in God’s guidance and I try to meet that with steady work, humility, and gratitude.
