Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanell Dunham.
Hi Chanell, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Like many dog or animal owners and lovers, I grew up with a pet always by my side. From gerbils, to hamsters, to bunnies to dogs, animals have had my heart since the beginning and my love for them has guided me through my life’s decisions, placing me exactly where I’m supposed to be, today.
I graduated from Pennsylvania State University with my Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and minor in Agribusiness Management. But no, I did not want to be a veterinarian. After graduating, I started to immerse myself in the animal industry by volunteering at local rescue organizations and ultimately landed a part-time job as a Clinic Advisor at Petco’s vaccination clinic, Vetco. Through these experiences, I initially thought I wanted to start my own animal rescue organization, saving the countless stray dogs and cats, finding them forever homes. So, I went on to pursue my Master of Science in Nonprofit Management and Social Entrepreneurship from the University of Baltimore; not realizing then that the Entrepreneurship focus would be more crucial than ever.
As I began to do more research within the pet industry, I was discovering other opportunities within the field, which led me to dog daycare facilities. I wasn’t very privy to this, but as I explored more, I thought – an opportunity to pour into dogs all day? Yes, please!
With that, I started walking and caring for dogs on third party platforms to gain experience and from there I birthed what is now – The Muttropolitan Pet LLC – a small dog boarding and daycare business in Southeast, Washington, DC.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been the exact opposite of smooth, but without a doubt it’s been absolutely worth it. I started my business as a side hustle in Fall 2021 and as of April 2025 it became my full-time occupation as I was laid off my full-time job from 13 years of federal government service. Stepping into the world of entrepreneurship is no easy or simple feat. Internally, I’ve struggled with self doubt – am I made for this; worry – is it going to all work out; fear, anxiety, you name it!
But two things have kept me grounded through it all – my faith and my community. I had to understand that all the feelings mentioned above are normal and they are ok to experience but not to dwell in for too long. When you are living in alignment, you have to trust that everything will work out for your good. And despite you knowing your purpose or calling, it doesn’t come without a fight to get where you’re supposed to be.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I own and operate a dog sitting company – The Muttropolitan Pet – where I am the convenience for pet parents while they are away or busy. My services include overnight dog sitting; drop in visits for snuggles, a potty break or feeding; dog walks; daycare and transportation services.
I’ve turned my love for dogs into more than a business, but a growing organization founded and centered upon pet care, hospitality, community and education. The Muttropolitan Pet provides a safe space for pet parents, youth and community members to bridge the gap between pet care and education, specifically in my Southeast DC neighborhood where these services frankly do not exist. We are building a space to educate, inspire and invest in our new, current and future dog owners which makes us different from the rest.
As we continue to expand and invest within our community, our vision is to partner with local animal rescue organizations, small businesses and community organizations to host educational workshops, seminars, events and job opportunities.
I’m most proud of my ability to pivot unexpectedly, trust myself and dive 100% into my business full-time despite not knowing what lies ahead. Throughout these past 6 months, I’ve accomplished so much and I’m so excited for what’s ahead. I hope you will stay tuned to see the fruit of my labor. Follow me on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Facebook: @themuttropolitanpet.
What makes you happy?
Pouring into myself, my community and of course, my personal dogs and extended furbabies (aka my clients)!
When I’m not caring for dogs, I love to journal, read, listen to podcasts, travel, exercise and eat good food. I believe the cliche saying, you can’t pour from an empty cup, so as much as I’m a giver, I make sure to be intentional about ensuring my needs are met. I love to dive into a good book or podcast to expand my intellectual knowledge, travel to see the beautiful treasures of mother nature while also experiencing a personal mental refresh and working out to clear my mental. My friends and family are a big influence in my life and I’m so grateful for their love and support.
