Rising Stars: Meet Broadus Nesbitt III of Randallstown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Broadus Nesbitt III.

Hi Broadus, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in West Baltimore. When I was two years old I was (still am) infatuated with dinosaurs. I would watch Jurassic Park on repeat far into my early elementary years, but my curiosity began to peak. At the age of seven years old I began to explore the features of the dvd of Jurassic Park 3. I sat back and watched the behind the scenes footage and it was at that moment that I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I wanted to make films, act, and tell stories in any way possible. I filled out a questionnaire at back to school night and it asked us what did we want to be when we grew up and I told my mom and she was shocked. She thought I’d say a paleontologist or something with animals, but acting took my heart. While I wanted to act, me and my mom didn’t know where to start, so I didn’t begin to pursue anything acting wise until I was well into high school. I always made short films but I was usually directing or telling the story, while also being in them with my cousins.

Fast forward to 2017-18 my senior year of high school, I began to get into theatre, curtesy to Mr. Charleston, teacher at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. He was the first man to trust me with any type of leadership role, and entrusted me with the title of President of the Poly Undisputed Film Club. Under his supervision I wrote and directed a play that was performed for some classes.

After graduating I attended CCBC where I studied performing arts. I was cast in my first large scale play my first semester. From there I built connections and a network of wonderful people which led to me booking professional work with Arena Players Inc, Rapid Lemons Productions, Fells Point Corner Theater, Vagabond Players, and Artistic Synergy of Baltimore.

Now I’m currently on a small hiatus as I’m waiting to get back into my workflow. I’m scheduled to direct “She Kills Monsters” late spring next year at Artistic Synergy of Baltimore. I’m also writing a Pirate Fantasy Novel that is currently still in development so I’m excited about that as well.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but I’m not sure I can necessarily call it rough either. It’s definitely a nice middle ground, at least for myself. I have an amazing support system, parents, friends, and other family members who are always excited to hear about the next thing that I’m doing.

The struggles come in with extended rehearsals which is all apart of the game and it makes the final product that much more worth it. Also financial woes to no fault but my own, but in the end it’s all worth it.

Sometimes one can suffer from imposter syndrome, and constantly down themselves by saying “I shouldn’t be here, everyone here is so much more talented than me” and sometimes you have to tell yourself that you’re here for a reason. Live up to the moment, exceed expectations.

Another struggle at least for myself is breaking out of that comfort zone. I’d love to branch out and go out of state to audition and just get my name out there more, but the comfort of being home is always something that I think about constantly.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So I’m an actor, writer, director, photographer, and filmmaker. I’m more known for acting I’d say, but I’m always trying to keep the rotation fresh. I also love to have fun with whatever I’m doing. I’m a firm believer of no one should come to work AND be miserable, that’s not going to fly around me. When I’m directing a play, I tell my actors “we are in a play so…. Play.” Just to let them feel at ease and that there is no right or wrong when playing!

I’m proud of being able to connect with people and learn a little bit of everything from different people. Nobody is off limits when it comes to knowledge, and everybody has something that you can learn.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Oh man, I like to think that I’d be finally in the full swing of things, touring shows, whether it’s children’s shows or on Broadway either one. If not that, then I’m deep in the film making industry making action adventure films.

I’d like to bring things full circle and finally do a Jurassic Park/World movie, how poetic would that be?

I’d like to adapt my novel into a tv series once it’s all said and done. My ultimate goal is to have a company and let it blossom for like minded people. Something to give indie authors, screenwriters, producers, actors, every artistic outlet you can think of an opportunity to make it and to be the best. We live in a time where we have to make our own moments, if I can provide that to someone with a vision then I’ll do it.
