Today we’d like to introduce you to Bri Mobley.
Hi Bri, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’m originally from Philly (Philadelphia) but I’ve fallen in love with the blackness in Baltimore City. I’ve been living here for 13 years and I’ve seen so many parallels between Philly and Baltimore.
The reflection between the cities ignited a fire in me to pour into the Baltimore community. I’ve been so inspired by Black people in my entrepreneurship.
I started my Doula business here 2 1/2 years ago because of the need to support black women in their pregnancy and delivery journey. The maternal mortality rate in Baltimore is higher than the state average.
I’ve always been an advocate for the community. I’m an avid shopper of black businesses and Baltimore is filled with them! It was in my spirit to create a Mecca for black-owned businesses. This led to the birth of BLK ASS FLEA MKT, in May 2021, and I had no idea of the impact it would have!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If there’s a word I can use to describe BLK ASS FLEA MKT, it would be: Ease.
I feel like the intentionality of creating exclusive space for black people, businesses, and entrepreneurs in a city FILLED with creatives, makers and artists only makes sense. There’s been nothing but beautiful people in every aspect that have magnetized the BLK ASS FLEA MKT and its events.
We’ve built amazing relationships and partnerships! And I have the BEST business partner, Sola Ekunseitan… we all need a Sola! If you know, you know!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’d consider myself a “Community Creatress”.
Yes, I made that up, haha. But, it’s because I’m not restricted to one thing. I’m known for my activism for Black healing. I’m known for my Doula business, Birth (Rite) Wellness. I’m most recently known for the creation of the BLK ASS FLEA MKT.
I’ve always been a creator based on needs within the Black community and that’s what I’m most proud of: my commitment to my people.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Baltimore City has SO MUCH CHARACTER.
It’s full of life, charism, creativity, and community! I can feel the heart of the city, it’s why I’m in love with it. It’s so unfortunate that in the media, the focal point is the darkness in Baltimore City. But there is light!
