We’re looking forward to introducing you to Nicolette Brown. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Nicolette , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Music is one of my favorite ways to heal. Whenever I listen to a song, it takes me right back to a specific place, time, feeling, or person. This happens most when I think about my first heartbreak, my journey to healing, my school years, and my childhood. It also reminds me of my achievements and other big moments. Music’s effect on me is hard to put into words. It always feels special.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Nicolette, better known to my social media audience as En Monét. As a content creator, I focus on beauty, makeup, hair, fashion, and lifestyle topics, primarily sharing my work through platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. What makes this special to me is the ability to share both brief insights and in-depth conversations with viewers who genuinely appreciate my content. It truly warms my heart when people encourage me to continue creating, showing me that my efforts are seen and valued.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My maternal grandfather. He made it a point to tell myself and others that he knew that I was destined to be great. I always remember the story my mom told me that my grandfather shared with her, basically saying, he didn’t know what I aspired to be as child growing up but whatever it was he knew it would be SOMETHING. By something, he likely meant great. So even through his passing, I always try to live vicariously through his words and hope that I’ve made him proud by what I’ve accomplished so far on Earth.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Trials and hardships, in my opinion, have significantly contributed to my personal growth. In my opinion, how will you have the grit and determination to continue if you have never experienced failures in life? I believe it’s the perseverance that motivates you to make better decisions, and remember that one bad day doesn’t necessarily have to dictate the rest of your future.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
One cultural value I cherish is that “I belong and I deserve a seat at the table”. As a Black woman, I believe our work and incredible strength are significantly undervalued in corporate, personal, and interpersonal settings, as we wear many hats in society. Therefore, it is essential to speak life into yourself and let others know that your values, aspirations, and voice matter, and you deserve to be in spaces where others recognize your importance, regardless of the room you choose to be a part of.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope to leave this part of myself with others—that no matter what I engaged in, I attempted to put my best foot forward with grace. Even if the result was not what I hoped for, I could at least say that an effort was made.
