Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty Thom.
Hi Ty, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been a music lover. It’s been an integral piece throughout my whole life. I grew up in a pretty musical and entrepreneurial-spirited household. Both of my parents are business owners. My mother owns a home healthcare agency.
My father is a DJ and owns a production company that he’s passed along to one of my younger brothers. My grandfather was also a drummer for James Brown which was pretty cool. My father put me on to a lot of classic Hip-Hop and R&B. I’ve always had a deep love for music. I have very fond memories of certain songs and albums that mark chapters of my life at specific points.
As far as making music, I’ve been writing my whole life. Growing up, I used to write a lot of poetry and would freestyle with my friends at school during lunch. I started to actively chase a career in my sophomore year of college. I was playing basketball in school and a couple of my teammates were already artists. Two of my teammates were in a rap duo and another one was starting to learn how to produce. I decided to buy recording equipment for my 20th birthday and made my first mixtape within the same month.
After that, I realized what my true passion was. Since 2016, I’ve released hundreds of songs and several projects I’m very proud of. I was recording in my dorm room until I graduated from school. Once I came back home I continued to make music and develop my company, GOD VZN. The team is made up of some of my close friends who share the same ambition to make this dream a reality.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everything has its challenges. I resonate with the quote “It takes 10 years to be an overnight success”. I’ve gone through a lot of ups and downs as an artist and business owner. The biggest obstacle is simply trusting the process. Nothing you want will ever come easy.
You have to work at it every day. You never know how close you are to breaking through until it finally happens. I’ve always understood that my path is very different from other people. Nothing has ever come easy to me. I’ve always had to grind ten times harder than everyone else to even get noticed. But through that, I’ve built an unmatched work ethic and confidence in myself that’s helped me push through any obstacle I’ve come across.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I wear a lot of different hats. Mainly, I’d say I’m a music artist and entrepreneur. I make hip-hop and R&B. I’ve released over 10 projects and hundreds of singles since 2016. I’ve also gotten to work with a lot of dope artists over time like Quentin Miller, Westside Boogie, Cousin Stizz, Anhklejohn, etc.
I’m also the founder of GOD VZN, which is a creative company based in the DMV. We focus on artist management, creative direction, content curation, audio engineering, and fashion. I have a great team of creatives around me who share the same drive to impact our community in a real way. I want to provide opportunities and be a resource to others who want to excel in this space.
I’m most proud of the progress I’ve made throughout the years. I’ve come a long way from recording in my dorm room. For me, it’s important to recognize all the wins whether they’re small or big. I’m grateful for any indicator that lets me know I’m moving in the right direction. It makes me excited for where I’m headed in the future.
What sets me apart from everyone else is my determination and work ethic to be better every day. I have talent and God-given abilities but I will never let another person outwork me. I will never let my lack of effort be the reason for not being successful at whatever I do.
What matters most to you?
The thing that matters most to me is being to able make a living from my passion.
I want to build a functional ecosystem that can supply opportunities to my friends and family. I’m working this hard so I can enjoy the dope things we created later on in life. There’s a lot to be proud of but there’s also a lot to look forward to.
