Today we’d like to introduce you to Tierra Briscoe.
Hi Tierra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Absolutely. My journey began in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where I was raised. I didn’t know anything about yoga, to be honest. The only person I knew who practiced yoga and looked like me was my Uncle. He traveled the world to practice and would do cool poses at my Grandparents’ house, and I wanted to learn. I took my first yoga class in 2008, my freshman year at The Pennsylvania State University, during a time when the wellness industry didn’t reflect or represent people who looked like me… I am grateful for my Instructor, Shani (wherever you are girl, Thank You!!), she challenged me to be vulnerable and push my limits in class. Physically, yoga was easy, but mentally and emotionally, it was hard AF (can I say that? lol). Despite the initial discomfort, I kept returning to the mat, and over time, yoga became my sanctuary. It sustained me through heartbreak, burnout, and the constant pressure of being everything to everyone.
I had a love/hate relationship with my practice through the years… I had to learn how to show up for myself off that mat as well as on it. I found Bikram Yoga in 2014 and started going weekly to try and find myself… the person I was dating at the time felt I was going to yoga “too much”, sooo I stopped (in hindsight I should have stood up for myself)… I went through an extremely toxic breakup in 2015, from that same relationship, and reclaimed my practice. I was going to class about 5x a week. I got back on my fitness journey and lost so much weight and changed my life around. I started sharing my personal practice on social media, and people would ask if I taught, but I didn’t. It gave me the spark I needed to get my YTT. I started a GoFundMe and exceeded my goal (thank you, everyone who believed in me!!). My YTT program was an intensive one, so 14 hours a day, 14 days straight (whew, chile). I got an opportunity to teach my first event in 2016, and honestly, things just grew from there.
Before fully diving into wellness, I worked in federal law enforcement, I was a police officer, sergeant, and eventually a special agent. I attended FLETC three times and was recognized for my leadership and commitment to excellence. But as I evolved, so did my purpose. I realized that I wasn’t called to just enforce the law; I was here to help people heal. So, I pivoted. I decided to leave the federal government in 2018 to teach yoga full time. Now, it was not easy, and in hindsight, I should’ve left the government differently (with a plan lol). Either way, I was definitely leaving at some point. I was just so excited for my newfound freedom, I was taking on any and every opportunity that came my way. I felt lost and decided maybe massage school would help, lol… I did learn a lot, but it wasn’t until my first trip to Bali in 2019 that my life changed. It was my first time traveling solo internationally and on a retreat so far away. This trip changed me as a student, instructor, and person. When I returned home, things just changed for the better.
I created my first business, Flow2Glow (in hindsight, I had no clue what I was doing haha). The business then evolved into Nostalgic Co, Sol Full, and now we are at Tierra Briscoe Wellness, where I utilize yoga, trauma-informed healing, and mindfulness to support individuals, particularly Black women and underserved communities. I now lead retreats across the globe, from Bali to Costa Rica and Mexico, and teach in a variety of settings, including corporate offices, community centers, and correctional facilities. My work focuses on creating safe spaces for people to return home to themselves.
This journey hasn’t been linear, but it’s been powerful. Everything I do now is rooted in authenticity, resilience, and the belief that healing is a radical act of liberation. I’ve been blessed to co-create a life where I get to do what I love for a living, and that is something I do not take for granted.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Whew, it has NOT been a smooth road. When I first decided to leave the government, life was on a high! I was just excited to be booked for teaching opportunities, not taking my worth into account. As a result, I was often underpaid or not paid at all. That really took a toll, and it got to the point where I was unable to pay my rent alongside my best friend. At times, I even lacked gas money to get from point A to point B. I had to make the decision to move back in with my mother, whom I hadn’t lived with since leaving for college in 2008. There was definitely a point in 2018 where I felt lost, but then, in 2019, things changed for me. After that, my career as a yoga and wellness expert grew in ways I never would have imagined. Granted it has still been a journey standing up for my worth as a wellness instructor to be acknowledged, but I would not change anything for the world!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Tierra Briscoe Wellness is more than a business; it’s a movement rooted in healing, representation, and intentional living. I specialize in trauma-informed yoga, sports yoga, prison yoga, mindfulness, and curated wellness experiences that create space for individuals—especially Black women and system-impacted communities—to feel seen, safe, and supported.
Through my signature sol RESET Retreats, virtual yoga platform, and pop-up series Peace & Pose Studio, as well as my mentorship program Off the MAT, I’m proud to lead people back to themselves. Whether we’re flowing in Bali, journaling in Mexico, or breathing together on Zoom, my work invites folks to pause, release, and return to their power.
What sets me apart? I am me. I am literally my authentic self every time I step on the mat. I create safe spaces for others to be. I am the VIBE. I’ve been blessed to grow as an instructor, finding my voice and teaching in spaces all over. I blend lived experience, my law enforcement background, and spiritual grounding with professional training and heart-centered leadership. I’ve taught yoga to professional athletes, incarcerated youth, first responders, and corporate executives, and I approach each space with the same energy: authentic, intentional, and deeply affirming.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of how personal and expansive it’s become. I’m proud of being a disruptor in the wellness space for speaking on things others would gatekeep. I’m proud of leading a retreat of 43 Black Women and Men at River Mountain in PA, in the middle of Winter. I’m proud of being able to support other instructors in different capacities. People don’t just attend my retreats or take my classes; they stay connected. They return. They refer. They heal. That, to me, is impact.
I want readers to know that my business isn’t about perfection or performative wellness; it’s about real-life restoration. Whether you’re joining a retreat, signing up for an in-person class, or connecting through community events, the goal is always the same: to help you RESET, rise, and reclaim your peace.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to be my authentic self all ways, always. Also, never be ashamed to ask for help. One more for the road: What’s a risk with no obligation? Never be afraid to do things scared and out of your comfort zone.
