Meet Tavifa Gascon of Baltimore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tavifa Gascon

Hi Tavifa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Everything I do today happened naturally. It feels like all roads led here, and I simply opened my arms to all the opportunities this season of life offers me.

I’m a multifaceted artist based in Baltimore, serving as a performer, educator, photographer, and content creator.

My journey began while studying violin performance at the Peabody Conservatory. I found comfort in capturing the beauty of Baltimore’s streets through photography and sharing it on social media. Many people of Baltimore started following my journey, by finding me through my photos. After a while, more acquaintances and friends began reaching out for my services as a photographer and musician.

Right now, a typical week in my life is a whirlwind of activity:

I teach violin and viola lessons to about two dozen students.
I conduct at least one or two photo sessions, specializing in headshots and engagements.
I perform with a string quartet at one to three weddings, working with both external companies and my own, the Aster String Quartet.
Every Sunday, I upload a new YouTube video, which I typically edit throughout the week.
I manage my social media accounts, including my YouTube channel, and maintain regular communication with clients via email.
I also prioritize family, friendships, and community involvement.

While some weeks are more challenging than others, I find immense satisfaction in my ability to juggle multiple roles and accomplish so much. It’s a testament to the power of creating a structured system and following through.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Balancing multiple roles as a performer, educator, photographer, and content creator can be demanding. While I prioritize self-care through exercise, healthy eating, and sufficient sleep, these habits can sometimes take a backseat during busy periods.

To manage my workload effectively, I’ve implemented a structured schedule with two dedicated self-care days per week. I’ve also replaced “I’ll do it later” with a more actionable approach, scheduling specific times for tasks. While I aspire to hire a team to assist with content creation or administrative duties in the future, I currently take pride in handling these responsibilities myself.

Rejection is an inevitable part of freelancing. However, I’ve learned to view it as an opportunity for growth. When applying for opportunities, I cast a wide net, aiming for at least 20 submissions. Even a couple of positive responses can lead to significant opportunities and new lifetime relationships.

Despite these challenges, I’ve found immense satisfaction in my journey. My dedication and passion have enabled me to build a successful career and connect with inspiring individuals. The sense of community I’ve fostered both in-person and online through my work has been incredibly rewarding, and I intend to continue it for as long as possible.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The quartet that I founded, the Aster String Quartet, performs at a variety of events throughout the Baltimore/D.C area. We specialize in weddings, engagement parties, special events, and community concerts. We believe live music can enhance any occasion, and we’re honored to be entrusted with such a significant role.

As an educator, I firmly believe that learning an instrument offers numerous benefits beyond music. Students develop essential skills like leadership, focus, resilience, adaptability, creativity, memory development, professionalism, stage presence, and work ethic, all of which contribute to their overall growth. Seeing my students succeed and share their passion for music on some of the biggest stages in Baltimore is incredibly rewarding.

I’ve also cultivated a successful photography business. I specialize in engagement photoshoots and professional headshots—particularly for musicians. Each gallery fills me with gratitude as I relive the special moments I’ve had the privilege of documenting as couples embark on a new chapter. My years of experience as a performer have given me a keen understanding of musicians’ unique postures, expressions, and energy. Each photo captures their essence authentically.

Two years ago, I launched my YouTube channel to share my love for Baltimore and offer insights into my life as a musician. I quickly connected with viewers from around the world, sharing stories and experiences that resonate with others. Reading their comments and receiving positive feedback has been incredibly inspiring and has motivated me to continue my journey.

I believe my success stems from my honest, positive, and transparent approach to communication. I set clear expectations, create open lines of communication, and strive to ensure everyone involved is satisfied with the process. This approach has helped me build strong relationships with clients and collaborators in all areas of my life. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and the connections I’ve made.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I grew up in Chisinau, Moldova, a small country between Romania and Ukraine. I was the youngest of six children. Despite our busy schedules during the week, we always made time for a cherished family tradition: Sunday family lunches. After church, we would gather around the table, share delicious food cooked by my mom, and catch up on the week’s events. Those moments were filled with warmth and laughter, a time when the world seemed to pause. Looking back, I cherish those shared meals with my siblings and parents as some of the most precious memories we created together.
