Today we’d like to introduce you to Ta’Jah Fleming.
Hi Ta’Jah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in West Baltimore, and hair was something I loved from a young age. What started as a hobby, doing friends and family’s hair in the kitchen, later became a calling. For years, I worked in the medical field as an emergency medical technician while also in school for nursing. I loved serving others, but never felt truly fulfilled. After being injured on the job and later becoming a mom again in 2019, I realized the long hospital hours weren’t sustainable for me or my family. On top of that , I had lost my biggest support system when my mom passed away in 2016, which pushed me to reevaluate my life and the legacy I wanted to create.
In 2020, I took a leap of faith and officially launched TF The Hair Loft. At first, it was just about doing what I loved, but I quickly realized that running a business meant learning a whole new set of skills. I went back to school for business administration, and that education gave me the tools to grow not only my client base , but also my vision.
Today, TF The Hair Loft is about more than just hair, it’s about healthy transformations, building confidence, and creating wealth in our community. My journey has been filled with challenges, but also purpose: every setback taught me resilience, and every win reminded me why I started.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I had to learn as I went….balancing motherhood, finances, and building a business from the ground up. There were moments of uncertainty, from not knowing if clients would come through the door to figuring out the business side while still perfecting my craft.
The biggest struggle was shifting my mindset..understanding that I wasn’t just a stylist, I was a business owner. That meant learning to be discipline…long nights, sacrifices, and having to rebuild after setbacks. But every obstacle shaped me and gave me the tools to grow stronger.
I like to say the road wasn’t smooth, but it was necessary..it prepared me for the season I’m in now.
We’ve been impressed with TF The Hair Loft,LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
TF The Hair Loft isn’t just a salon space , it’s a space dedicated to transformation, confidence, and healthy hair journeys. We specialize in adult/ kid protective styles, silk presses, custom color, extensions, and treatments that restore and maintain hair health. What I’m most known for is creating styles that not only look beautiful in the moment, but also keep the integrity of the hair strong long-term.
What sets us apart is the way we combine artistry with education and care. Every client’s strand tells a story, and we take the time to listen, to understand their lifestyle, and to design a look that fits their needs without compromising the health of their hair. I make it a priority to teach my clients about maintenance, so their results last beyond the appointment.
Brand-wise, I’m proud that The Hair Loft has grown into more than just a service it’s a community. Beyond hair, we’ve built programs that support every stage of life: servicing children with special needs with patience and care, giving back to elders through affordable hair care services, rewarding loyalty with our client rewards program, and even educating clients on areas like home buying, credit, and private schooling. We also highlight the importance of mental health, fitness, and overall wellness because beauty is connected to the whole person, inside and out.
Our Strands of Hope fundraiser for breast cancer awareness is just one example of how we give back. These initiatives are about creating impact far beyond the chair, weaving together beauty, wellness, and community growth.
What I want readers to know is that TF The Hair Loft is about the full experience ,from the first interaction to the moment you sit in the chair to the confidence you carry when you leave. Whether it’s a silk press, braids, a custom wig, a full transformation, or services for life’s most meaningful moments , from weddings and photo shoots to compassionate care for loved ones who have passed .My mission is to make sure every client feels valued, cared for, and confident in their own skin. Because every strand has a story worth honoring.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe risk is a part of growth. Some of the biggest turning points in my life came from risks that didn’t come with a safety net. One of the hardest decisions I ever made was leaving behind a stable career in the medical field to follow a passion I wasn’t sure would sustain me or my family. At that time, I had young children depending on me, and there were days the fear of “what if it doesn’t work out?” felt overwhelming.
But I also knew that staying where I was meant living unfulfilled. So, I took the leap. I invested in myself, in my education, in my business , even when it stretched me financially and emotionally. Some risks paid off right away, others tested my faith, but every single one pushed me to grow.
For me, risk isn’t about impulsiveness. It’s about trusting that the unknown can hold something greater than the familiar, and being willing to bet on yourself even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed. That perspective has shaped not just my career, but who I am as a woman, a mom, and a business owner.
