Hi Sophia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Eeyah Holistic Spa is an award-winning spa located in Columbia, MD, proudly serving clients since July 2020. We specialize in oncology spa treatments, advanced skincare treatments, energy healing, massage therapy, Bowenwork, waxing, and tinting. By combining plant-based products with cutting-edge technology, we deliver personalized care that heals and beautifies the skin.
As the only oncology-trained spa in Howard County, we take immense pride in supporting clients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. The goal of our oncology-trained estheticians is to reduce the treatment’s side effects on the skin, hair and nails, while educating clients on safe, and effective skincare solutions.
On a personal note, I am a Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses alum and a lifelong learner. I hold a Master of Science in Business Law, a Post Graduate Certificate in Instructional Systems Design, and PMP certification. I left a successful career as a senior consultant with a global firm to embrace my calling: healing through skincare. Since graduating from Maryland’s first aesthetic school, Von Lee International School of Aesthetics, I’ve earned multiple advanced certifications, including HydraFacial Master Connect, DMK Paramedical Specialist, Global Skin Solutions Therapist, NCEA Esthetician, and Flawless Skin Therapist.
Beyond my work, I serve on the Leadership Team of the Women Leadership Development Institute at my local church and am a devoted mother to my 10-year-old daughter.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has certainly had its challenges, however each hurdle has played an integral role in the trajectory of our growth. The most significant hurdle was that of training the team. Three of our four estheticians were novices to the field with minimal experience, so it took time to share my 12 years of experience, acclimate them to the business and build their confidence. We also lost one team member shortly after we launched because she didn’t have enough clients. In hindsight, if given the opportunity to relaunch, I’d aim for a balance between experienced professionals and novices to the field.
To expedite and streamline the training process, we created training videos and leveraged vendor programs, which improved efficiency and enhanced learning. One of the most impactful sessions we completed as a team was a full-day workshop on the art of presence, led by a Gestalt-certified trainer. It taught us to listen deeply to our clients — to what is said, unsaid, and even silence.This training greatly improved the dynamic of the treatment room and improved overall client experience and connections
