Today we’d like to introduce you to Poet Taylor.
Hi Poet , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into media? Whew, baby, it’s been a wild ride—one that started with a little faith, a lot of hustle, and an audition for a radio contest at WERQ-92Q FM in Baltimore. The prize? A shot at an internship. I showed up, showed out, and turned that one moment into the start of something major. That little spark caught the attention of CBS RADIO’s Vice President of Urban Programming, and next thing I knew, I was stepping into the WPGC family in DC, ready to shake the room.
From there, my voice took me places. I landed my own morning show in West Palm Beach before making my way back to DC as the Executive Producer and Co-Host of The Joe Clair Morning Show. And now? I’m rockin’ the mic as the host of Midday Shenanigans on WPGC 95.5 FM, bringing all the vibes, laughs, and real talk to the DMV. Oh, and let’s not forget my TV fam—I get to spill the tea as the Washington, DC Correspondent for Dish Nation on FOX 5.
But here’s the thing—I’m not just here to entertain; I’m here to empower. Growing up in the DC and Maryland foster care systems taught me that it truly takes a village, and now I make sure I’m pouring right back into mine. Whether it’s serving on the board for Safe Shores DC, helping recruit for CFSA DC, or being a voice in the DC Department of Health’s Sex Is… campaign, I stay ten toes down for my community.
And let’s talk about giving back—because that’s where my heart is. Since 2017, my Bits of Joy and Toys holiday drive has blessed thousands of DMV families, making sure every kid gets to feel the magic of the season. In 2025, I launched Hidden Sheroes of the Village, a Women’s History Month celebration honoring phenomenal women making an impact in our communities. When I’m not on-air or out in the streets making moves, you just might catch me flexing my acting chops—on stage with DC Black Broadway and The Washington Ballet, or on screen in films on BET+, ALLBLK Network, and Bravo. And let’s not forget—I’m also a proud fur momma to my baby, Winston Savage Emmanuel Ameredith Taylor. 🐾
I’ve been honored as a Community Change Agent, a Titan Award-winning Radio Personality, the SpeakerCon Radio Personality of the Year, and most recently, the 2024 GWAP DC Community Commitment Award honoree. But listen, the real reward? Knowing I’m out here using my voice, my platform, and my story to uplift the next generation.
This journey is still unfolding, and trust me—the best is definitely yet to come.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh, honey, smooth road? Nah, that would’ve been too easy! My journey’s been more like a rollercoaster with a few sharp turns, unexpected loops, and a couple of “I can’t believe this is really happening” moments. But here’s the thing—you can’t get to the top without a few bumps along the way, right?
There were times when I wasn’t sure if I’d make it—like that one day when I showed up for that radio contest audition with zero clue about how the business really worked. But hey, the universe has a funny way of rewarding those with the right mix of hustle and heart. Let’s just say, I’ve definitely had to grow a thick skin. Rejections? Oh, I’ve had my share! But every “no” was just a detour to something bigger.
And then there’s the whole work-life balance situation. I thought I had to do it all—be everywhere, say yes to every opportunity. But let me tell you, that’s a one-way ticket to burnout. I realized I wasn’t just running myself ragged—I was running away from what truly mattered. So, I had to get real with myself. No became my best friend. I learned how to say no to projects that didn’t align with my vision, step back from events I didn’t need to be at, and just take a breather when my soul was screaming for one. Protecting my peace became my secret weapon and trust me—saying no has never felt so good!
Also had to learn how to be my own cheerleader. Y’all, that took work! I was always rooting for others, but I had to realize if I didn’t start clapping for myself, who else would? Some days, I had to look in the mirror and say, “Cuzzin, you got this and can’t NOBODY do this like you can and do!!” It wasn’t always easy, but I learned that the loudest applause has to come from within. I’m still figuring it all out, but now, I’m much more intentional with my energy. I make a concentrated effort to show up for myself just like I show up for community.
And before I forget, balancing life, the grind and giving back wasn’t always a smooth ride. There were nights I was on-air /in studio til 3 AM, juggling a day job, and still making time for community events. Spoiler alert: It felt like my life depended on it. But it was worth every second because those late nights, long hours, and tough conversations turned into something much bigger. The struggle’s real, but the payoff? Oh, it’s sweeter than I could’ve ever imagined and it won’t be a struggle forever.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I wear a lot of hats, but at the heart of it all, I’m a storyteller and a community advocate. My journey in media started with a leap of faith and a hustle that led to an internship. That moment turned into something much bigger and led me finding my voice and becoming a true part of the community I aimed to serve.
I specialize in is connecting with people—whether it’s through radio, television, or community engagement. I’ve spent over a decade curating spaces where people can feel heard and empowered. My work isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about impact. I make it my business to use my brand and platform to uplift, inspire, and give back to this villageof mine. I also make sure I’m always pouring into the people around me because no one person can do all the work on their own.
With that, I think what sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity. Whether I’m behind the mic, on stage, or working with community organizations, I show up as my true self. It’s something I carry with me every day. The work I do—comes from a place of real passion and purpose.
And what I’m most proud of is the ability with GOD’s grace and guidence to make a real difference. Whether it’s celebrating phenomenal women through Hidden Sheroes or ensuring every child in the DMV feels the magic of the season through my holiday drive, I’m proud to create spaces where people feel seen and heard. But above all, I’m proud of how GOD continues to use me —and knowing that I’m out here creating a blueprint that will guide future generations long after I’m gone to thier finsih lines!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The media industry is evolving at a rapid pace, and over the next 5-10 years, we’re going to see some major shifts. One of the biggest changes will be the integration of AI in content creation and broadcasting. AI is already playing a huge role in personalizing content, enhancing user experiences, and predicting what audiences want before they even know themselves. But even with AI taking the wheel in certain aspects, I believe the heart of media will always come down to human connection—our ability to speak to and connect with people in authentic ways.
As someone who’s been in the industry for a minute, I’m constantly thinking about how to stay ahead of the curve. The ability to adapt and evolve is key to staying relevant, and I see AI as an exciting tool that can help push creativity to new heights. However, I also believe it’s important for talent to continue learning, growing, and refining our skills in every area of the industry—from voice work and on-air presence to understanding new tech and staying connected with audiences on a deeper level.
I’m also deeply committed to community engagement, these efforts remind me that while tech will continue to evolve, people and the stories we tell will always be at the core of what we do.
And I believe the true key to staying ahead.. is to stay authentic, be open to learning, and embracing the new tools that help tell our stories in bigger, more impactful ways, while remebering to share the tips of navigating this things called life and not becoming the gatekeepers we faught so hard to get rid of. So AI & tech will play a major role in shaping the future of media, the human touch, creativity, and connection will always be what sets us apart.
