Today we’d like to introduce you to Olesha Haskett.
Hi Olesha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started in photography full time with weddings in 2007 after I graduated with a degree in Fine Arts. I loved certain parts of weddings, and my favorite was the bride getting ready. All of her friends and the woman in her family celebrate her beauty. Watching the joy and happiness on my bride’s faces was the best part.
Fast forward to 2017 I was recently divorced and wanted to find my beauty and sensuality again. I didn’t know who I was as a woman in her 30’s. I had been in a relationship then marriage since I was 18 and at 31 I had to figure it all out. It was a slow process, but getting back into photography and then boudoir helped a great deal. I decided to rebrand my business and focus on Black womxn only.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a smooth road because I am an optimist. Yes, I have had some moments where I have been disappointed, but overall I am always able to come out on top with a new skill or lesson learned. I know I am creating something larger than myself, so I make sure to learn all that I can from others’ mistakes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business centers on Black women and the way we can honor our bodies as they are now. I am a boudoir photographer with a private studio in PG county, Maryland. I am known for making Black womxn of all sizes feel beautiful, seen, and whole. What sets me apart from others is my brand only focuses on Black womxn as my clientele. I help us recognize our power, sensuality and sexuality on our own terms. This is done with boudoir sessions, lives on Instagram with Black sex coaches, and self-love workshops/retreats.
I am most proud that I get to provide a space for womxn who look like me to be comfortable in how they want to display their version of sexy. I want the readers to know that boudoir is not just to take sexy pictures, but also a way to gain back something you thought you had lost. With this is mind no two boudoir experiences are alike.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When networking I always ask myself how can I help the other person reach their goal. How can I be of value or do I know someone in the network that can be of value to this person. This helps a great deal because networking is all about sustainable relationships.
