Today we’d like to introduce you to Naomi Dillon.
Hi Naomi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated from PT school in 2019. Moving back home, I want to gain some experience in the field before I really considered opening up my own practice. During this time, I developed a passion for pelvic floor physical therapy, and moved to a job that supported me in my pursuit of specialization. While going through this training and building up a pelvic health program at this company. After a few years and some hard discussions, I realized I wanted to take a chance on myself and pursue starting my own clinic. Over the course of 3 months, I worked tirelessly with the help of my family and friends to find and move into a functional space.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Moving to a new area and networking with a whole new group of people has been an adventure! There have definitely been times where work is hard, but there are also times where it is extremely rewarding. Getting onboard with insurances was one of those difficulties. But after a few months of doing everything in my power and waiting for the system to work it’s magic, I can now say that I’m in network with Medicare, Blue Cross, and Aetna.
One of my other major concerns in going out on my own was the lack of community. But I have been so lucky to have met a few other therapists in the area and we are beginning a group for independent practitioners to network and support one another in our journey.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a physical therapist who is passionate about not only helping your pain improve, but my true passion lies in helping you find ways to improve your longevity. Often times, PT gets you far enough that you can get back to your regular life, but what if we can take it to the next level and help you build and maintain healthy habits. Part of this shift involves zooming out from your pelvic floor dysfunction, knee pain, or back pain and seeing you as a whole person. In someone’s initial evaluation, we assess the affected area and the surrounding structures, sometimes going all the way back to the spine. We cover questions like: How is your sleep? Do you eat enough for your activity level? Do you have a community that you feel connected to? Do you feel pain in other areas of your body?
Starting that first day, we then combine hands on manipulation of tissues (massage, joint mobilization, cupping, or dry needling) with focused strength and mobility work in the clinic. We then bolster our work with an approachable and specific home program, that over time develops into a program for you to take with you to the gym.
After years of looking at someone’s affected area in isolation, I have found that assessing the whole person, not just one part, and acting as someone’s accountability partner helps my patient have lasting results.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The big things I have learned so far on this journey:
– boundaries are important, keep them as best you can
– ask for help
– be specific in your questions
– embrace the cringe, it’s only cringey because you’re still learning
– be persistent
– authentic interactions are critical in a highly curated world
– find your community
There are a lot of other things that I have had to learn that I was not prepared for in school that apply specifically to being an independent healthcare provider. One big example, understanding an insurance agreement and how to properly assess someone’s benefits. That has been a big area of learning for me.
