Meet Mora Reed of Zoe & Co. Candle Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Henry and Mora Reed.

Hi Henry and Mora, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We are a husband and wife duo who started our small business during Covid after I was laid off in March 2020. My background consists in product management, while Henry focuses on finance and business. We have always had a thing for candles and decided to make our own back in 2017, waiting on the arrival of our daughter, Zoe. With us expecting a newborn, we were very cautious of chemicals being used in our homes, including candles we lit in our Pigtown apartment. Our focus was to make clean-burning candles that were 100% phthalate and paraben-free, giving us a slower, cleaner burn with no black soot.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When we decided to create Zoe & Co. Candle Company, so much was invested in testing new jars, wicks, and fragrances. Investing into a business venture, we had no idea the future of, especially after our household dropped to one income, was terrifying. After taking our first order via messenger, transactions and shipping were a little bumpy (and quite expensive)! We quickly shifted to create an easy ordering experience for our customers and a way to view order history and quickly ship at a discounted rate.

Throughout the pandemic, we also faced inventory dilemmas. A few times, specific vessels were out of stock for months. Even the wicks and oils used in select candles were hard to keep in stock at times. We’ve since vetted reliable vendors and stocked up on our most popular fragrances and vessels.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Henry and I were raised in families with strong women, and now we are raising a little girl to be just as strong! This is why Zoe & Co. Candle Company is named after our daughter. With her now four years old, she is hands-on while making candles and home fragrances at home. Zoe & Co. Candle Company provides 100% hand-poured soy candles by sourcing premium products we proudly brand with our daughter’s name. We also pride ourselves on sustainability by ordering bulk to reduce transit, recycling jars (and offering discounts for every returned jar), and reusing packing materials. Using the purest oils and natural ingredients means no need to worry about the air quality of your home or office. Our candles are 100% phthalate and paraben-free, giving you a slower and cleaner burn with no petrol-carbon soot. Over the last 2 years, we have hopped around from Baltimore to Silver Spring and Annapolis to Crownsville, participating in vendor shows and farmers’ markets. We are proud to have shipped to 37 states and DC and have partnered with HGTV hosts, recording artists, and the Grammy Awards.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Every fragrance we create stems from someone or something we love, whether it’s travel, family, friends, or memories. We pride ourselves on being transparent, and are firm believers in sharing the ingredients used in our products. Outside of our business, we also share our journey, including my mom’s passing in January 2022. Roxanne is a candle we added to our collection in 2021, named after her. It is an aromatic blend of jasmine, fresh lavender, musk, cedar & Asian sandalwood – a combination my mom loved!
