Today we’d like to introduce you to Moises G. Madrid.
Hi Moises, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Moises G. Madrid, and I am a young entrepreneur in my 20s who has always been fascinated by how business and money work. As a child, I quickly picked up on my dad’s business instincts, and by age eight, I had already started my first venture. Being the only Hispanic kid in a dominant Caucasian neighborhood, I noticed that my friends and classmates had never tried Mexican candy. I soon began trading and selling the candy, and before I knew it, I was running my own candy stand outside of my home. It was then that I discovered my passion for entrepreneurship, and I learned that by using my profits to purchase more inventory, mark it up, and sell it, I could generate even more revenue.
As I got older and entered middle school, I noticed that my peers were into video games, and I quickly realized that I could make a profit from buying and selling games as well. I had a list of games that other students wanted me to purchase for them, and I would often resell them for a profit. However, my focus was always on how I could help others while also profiting at the same time. I played all sports, including soccer, baseball, and basketball, but my main passion was Taekwondo. As a prodigy I excelled and even won multiple competitions, including making it to the junior Olympics.
When I became an instructor at a Taekwondo studio called Scholar Athlete in Placentia, CA, I learned the importance of talking to customers and solving problems. I quickly became a personal trainer throughout high school and junior college, and by the time I reached Cal State Fullerton, I was running my own studio. However, I eventually realized that I needed a change, and I began to explore other opportunities. That’s when I met my mentor, Melissa Bautista, who ran a successful medical billing company called Statim. I was immediately drawn to her lifestyle and asked for any position she would be willing to accept me in. She started me off doing follow-up calls for insurance claims processed for clients, but I soon demonstrated that I had a value that hadn’t been utilized yet: marketing. I created my own department within her business and ran the marketing department for Statim, bringing in more clients and revenue than ever before.
As time went on, I continued to search for ways to help more people and create new revenue streams for myself. That’s when I founded MGM Partners. Since I was already reaching out to prospects and potential clients for third-party medical billing, I thought to myself, “What if I had another service of value to offer?” I could offer it to the same prospects I was already speaking with. Melissa agreed, and I created another revenue stream for myself while helping even more people.
I have always believed in helping others while also profiting at the same time. Through my experiences in entrepreneurship, Taekwondo, personal training, and medical billing, I have learned that the key to success is finding ways to help others and using my skills and knowledge to create value for myself and those around me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been one marked by challenges and difficulties, especially in my upbringing. Growing up, my family experienced significant financial hardships, and my parents’ divorce added to the struggle. During one particularly difficult period, my mother and I had to live in a hotel, which was not an ideal place for a child to spend their formative years. However, we were grateful for having a roof over our heads and a bed to sleep in.
To make matters worse, I also had to deal with bullying in elementary school. I was ridiculed for not having “cool” shoes, which was a painful experience for me. However, I came to realize that perhaps my bullies were dealing with their own issues and insecurities that led them to belittle others.
When we moved into a townhome in La Jolla, CA, it was not the beautiful, luxurious area that many people associate with the name. Instead, our street was plagued by gangs, violence, graffiti, and drugs. I saw things as a child that no child should have to see, such as my first deceased body in middle school while walking home from Kramer Middle School with friends along the train tracks. The street I lived on was once reported to be more dangerous than the streets of Compton, LA.
Despite these challenges, I never lost hope or gave up. Instead, I learned to take my failures as lessons and to focus on the positive. While my upbringing was not easy, it made me a stronger and more resilient person. I am proud of my journey and the person I have become.
