Meet Matthew Gold of Zeffert and Gold Catering

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Gold.

Hi Matthew, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Zeffert & Gold Catering is a true family business that has grown through generations of passion, creativity, and dedication to our community. The company was originally founded by Monroe Zeffert, who built his reputation on exceptional food and personalized service. My father, Aaron Gold, later joined and helped expand the business throughout the Baltimore area, earning the trust of countless couples, families, and organizations.

I grew up surrounded by the energy of events and the excitement of bringing people together through food. After spending years learning every part of the business, from washing dishes to leading events, I took on the role of owner and creative director. Today, myself and ownership team of Ben Smith, Matt Campion, Kim Smith and Amie Gold continue to honor our family’s legacy while evolving with modern tastes, trends, and technology.

Our team is like an extended family, and that sense of care is reflected in everything we do. We’re proud to remain locally owned and deeply rooted in Baltimore, continuing to celebrate life’s most meaningful moments with our clients, just as my father and Monroe did before me.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any long-standing family business, our road hasn’t always been smooth. The catering industry can be unpredictable, and we’ve faced our share of challenges, from economic shifts and staffing shortages to the incredible disruption that COVID brought to live events. There were moments when we had to completely rethink how we operated, finding creative ways to keep our team working and our clients cared for, even when gatherings weren’t possible.

Transitioning the business from one generation to the next also came with its own lessons. Balancing tradition with innovation meant honoring what made Zeffert & Gold special while evolving to meet modern tastes, expectations, and technology. It wasn’t always easy, but every challenge pushed us to adapt, strengthen our systems, and grow as a team.

In many ways, those struggles shaped who we are today; a resilient, people-first company that values creativity, integrity, and community just as much as great food.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Zeffert and Gold Catering?
Zeffert & Gold Catering is a family-owned, off-premise catering company based in Baltimore, Maryland. For more than three decades, we’ve had the privilege of helping our clients celebrate life’s most meaningful moments — from weddings and mitzvahs to corporate galas, fundraisers, and private gatherings.

We’re known for creating customized, chef-driven menus that reflect each client’s personality, vision, and taste. Our culinary team is passionate about using fresh, local ingredients and crafting dishes that feel both elegant and approachable. Whether it’s a black-tie wedding at a historic museum or a casual company picnic, we approach every event with the same care, creativity, and attention to detail.

What truly sets us apart is our people and our process. We’ve built a team that feels like family — many of whom have been with us for years — and that sense of trust and warmth carries through to our clients. Our “Art of Celebration” philosophy means we focus not only on the food but also on the overall guest experience, ensuring that every detail, from presentation to service, feels thoughtful and seamless.

Brand-wise, we’re most proud of our reputation for consistency and heart. Baltimore is our home, and our brand reflects that — local, creative, community-minded, and grounded in genuine hospitality. We want people to know that when they work with Zeffert & Gold, they’re not just hiring a caterer. They’re partnering with a team that truly cares about their story and is dedicated to making their celebration unforgettable.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality that has been most important to our success is genuine care, for our clients, our team, and our community. In catering, it’s not just about great food or flawless execution; it’s about people. We’ve built our company around relationships, and that sense of care shows up in everything we do, from the way we design menus to how we serve guests at an event.

That mindset also extends to our team. Many of our employees have been with us for years, and we work hard to create an environment where they feel valued, empowered, and part of something meaningful. When people love where they work, that energy and pride naturally carry through to our clients.

At the end of the day, our success comes from leading with heart, staying authentic, treating every event like it’s our own, and always remembering why we do what we do: to help people celebrate life’s most important moments with warmth, joy, and connection.
