Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Hudson.
Hi Malik, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I go by SpikeLeak and I am a music-related content creator. I am from Baltimore County, Randallstown, Maryland. I started creating content in 2017 with my friends, being inspired by the popular black creators at the time: Zias, PontiacmadeDDG, and Poudii. At this time I would say I knew I wanted to be a content creator, but looking back, I lacked a direction, consistency, and an identity as I was just doing any and everything that I found entertaining. Since the beginning, i did know I wanted to use content to create a safe space to express who I really was to the world and share things that I identify with.
One thing that has always been a HUGE part of me is music! Music has stuck with me since the beginning. Even looking back at certain memories in my life, music is always attached. From taking roadtrips with my family as my Dad plays his Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild, to my brother introducing me to the greatness of Kanye Wests discography when I was young, and even me and my sister studying dance moves from America’s Best Dance Crew. My dad also DJs and had me and my siblings listening to alot of 80s and 90s hip hop as we favored group acts like A Tribe Called Quest and Wu Tang, Pete Rock’s production, and the roots of hip hop. I grew up in the hip hop culture, and grew even deeper in the roots as I began dancing in my middle and high school years (which came from the influences of Americas Best Dance Crew)
Honestly, I didnt realize how impactful music was to me until my high school years. I always listened to good music, but I only seen it as sounds in my ears I enjoyed, rather than artistic expression and storytelling. The rapper who actually made me realize was J. Cole back when he dropped Friday Night Lights. But when I realized how Zias reacted to music and made it entertaining and funny, I was eager to jump in the community and start reacting myself. But not only make it entertaining with my personality, but also share my knowledge and experiences with music. After I changed my perspective, me and my friend ,Express, started reacting to more and more music that we were interested in. As we were still falling short and lacking consistency, we were still making a good amount of buzz as our viewers looked at us as the best reactors and even anticipated our videos.
As we were inconsistently dropping, we were trying to take content more serious in the year 2021. Living about 20 minutes away from each other, we made that commute every week to film a video. From 2021-2023 we were doing reactions, playlist videos, and even series that I came up with myself such as the “Under the Radar”, “PrimeSound”, and “Album Awards” series, etc. I was always trying to push the envelope and create something new because I enjoy using the creative aspect of my mind. When 2024 arrived, Express planned a trip to Africa for a few months and I couldn’t afford to let the channel die down so Idecided to keep posting videos myself. This is the very moment where their was a sudden drift in not only my content, but also my comfortability and confidence on camera. It pushed me to be 10x better at what I do since I knew a part of my crew was missing.
At this moment, I exceeded to become better than exceptional. I had moments where I was posting every single day, my editing got better, I learned and studied the algorithm, I experimented with different styles, improved my thumbnails. Everything was looking good, but I didn’t get too satisfied. At this time, I just wanted a supportive community and I knew Youtube was not the only source to build that. I then announced that I will start streaming on Twitch and start a community on Discord. As I was starting my new chapter, I also realized there is space to find (and network with) people of similar interest on your daily social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram. I haven’t found my space on Instagram (yet) but Twitter has been so impactful to me as I found a lot of my favorite people there. I want to give a special shoutout to all of the Twitter mutuals because without them, my community wouldn’t be the same. Shoutout to Lei, Bria, Julian, Sirenity, Juno, Tindo, Qwest, Jaylen, Seaven, Eli, and I wont be able to name everyone but just know there is a lot of love I have for my twitter mutuals. All of them are so special to me
With these connections, I started hosting events like Aux Battles, Listening Parties, Beatmaking, etc all on live stream. I stream on Sunday and every time music drops Thursday Night, Friday at midnight so we can all listen together and they can see my reaction live on stream before it is edited and posted to Youtube. This has gained the attention of some of my favorite acts in music such as Monte Booker, Smino, Saba, Marco Plus, Doechii, FlwrChyld, and more.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Rebranding: Rather if it was a change in content, scenery, or going solo, rebranding is always challenging because the consistency will be lost. Everyone is so used to seeing the same thing, and people become attached to certain aspects of your visuals. Once the change happens, the initial following gets thrown off a bit due to that attraction being absent. This has caused a temporary loss of viewership and even a permanent loss of specific supporters, but I will always do what is best for me and my content at the end of the day.
Algorithm: Learning the algorithm is challenging but also very important in the content world due to its constant changes. Your knowledge on how the algorithm works for you can make or break the success your channel and videos bring. It is an ongoing challenge as there are constant changes and the best way to go about it is to do your research, adjust your content, and experiment with what works for you.
Wearing all the Hats: As a content creator, it doesn’t end when the cameras are off. Honestly that is just the beginning, as the hardest parts come after. I am a one man band who is self taught in graphic designing and video editing. I take ride in my editing because most reactors don’t edit as much as I do and it gives my content not only an advantage stylistically, but it also looks more animated. With that being said, It can take me long hours just to edit one video and that takes away from other things I have to prioritize such as time with friends, potential work oppurtunities, relationships, and even free time. Balancing it all, and even having to rejecting other things to make time for my content hasnt been easy and can get to me mentally. You’re expected to post nonstop—even when tired, sick, or overwhelmed. Life doesn’t care about your upload schedule and the algorithm doesn’t care about your life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a multi-platform music-related content creator who specialize in reactions, music activities, and creative ideas. My music taste has brought me a great community that I cant be more thankful for. From reacting to albums from my favorite artists such as Smino, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator, Isaiah Rashad, and more; supporters of these artists turned into supporters of my content.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Likes:
– I LOVE community building, ands that is my main priority. I love treating my community as family instead of a “fanbase” and I noticed that creates all the difference in the world. This community made me realize how infectious my positive energy is and how impactful I can be. I have learned so much through this journey but the biggest lesson it taught me was nothing different from raising a baby, “It takes a village”! Everything in life does. Your support system is your backbone!
– I love having a safe space where I feel comfortable to talk about my biggest passion (music). It gives such an “at-home” comfort feeling, as if this is where I should be, and these are the people I should be there with. Sometimes outside of the content, music discourse is not as easy. My community prioritizes quality over anything, and a lot of people value the numbers or popularity (which doesn’t mean the music is better). Also, it gets hard meeting in the middle with people that doesn’t enjoy the same style of music and/or talk down on it. At the end of the day, its all opinionated, but i like sharing perspectives with people who respect the art and respect each other just as much in a space where curiosity matters more than being ‘right.
– I really enjoy making the content I love, listening or talking about music I love. Sharing music has always been joyful since I was young and now I do it on such a larger scale.
Dislikes:
– Overworking myself, being a one-man show where I have to come up with ideas, sometimes write scripts, buy all the necessary equipment and software, film, edit, make thumbnails, do all copywriting and marketing all by myself can be very draining. Eventually, I will hire some people to work with me and take some weight on my shoulders, but for now I am not able to financially.
