Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Manning and Carol Heckman from Trillium Wellness.
Hi Lisa and Carol, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Carol – I started my career as a nurse working with cancer patients and families working in a variety of positions along all parts of the cancer journey. This is where I really saw the impact stress has on health and the importance of a whole-person approach in caring for them. Mind, body, emotion, spirit, social, relational, and environmental factors all play a part in healthy resilience and recovery.
Patients and families were asking me for ways to support and rebuild their health and well-being. This was the catalyst for my own educational and personal journey into using medicinal foods, herbs, and energetic modalities for healing. Through my studies in nutritional counseling, I began to understand the power of food as medicine and the importance of the body being able to properly digest in order to access the raw materials needed to repair and restore.
I also found my own skin issues clearing, my weight reduced, and my energy and mood improved! I am passionate about helping others to feel the same.
It’s exciting to see people turn their health around and enjoy well-being again.
Lisa –
I started working as a Craniosacral therapist a little over 20 years ago. My early focus was on chronic pain and disease management. Over time, I began to realize that the main indicator for quality of life and recovery was being able to manage emotional stress: depression, fear, and anxiety.
Carol and I met when I relocated to Maryland in 2015 and through our sharing and collaboration, we found that our philosophies and strategies around the healing process dovetailed beautifully.
Our Trillium Wellness practice was born out of the desire to create an integrative treatment model that focused on healing and repairing the physical aspects of emotional stress.
I spent my early adult years learning how to heal from deep childhood trauma and was blessed to be able to turn that journey into a vocation and career. I personally know the grace that comes with being at peace, fully present in my body, and being able to transform challenges into the strongest links in my personal growth.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of our biggest challenges has been raising awareness in the community about how simple and natural approaches to health management are the best first line of defense. Our bodies have an amazing inherent ability to heal and adapt! We continue to seek out opportunities to educate and empower people. Our mission is to instill hope and act as guides to help individuals discover and gain confidence in their own body’s wisdom.
We’ve been impressed with Trillium Wellness, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lisa – We believe that rewiring the Gut–Brain connection is essential for fostering resiliency and balance.
In Craniosacral we work with the limbic system to restore a sense of peace and calm.
My main goal is to help people reset the physical stress response from chronic ‘fight or flight’ to ‘rest and recover’. The first step is learning how to be comfortable in the body while bringing awareness to what the physical/emotional cues of discomfort are trying to say.
Then we work with light touch cranial work, music, frequency, and movement to retrain and repattern the nervous system responses. The outcome is usually a sense of deep peace, and this often opens people up to new insights and inspiration; restoring hope.
When the nervous system is in balance all of the other endocrine and hormonal responses switch over to repair mode. We send the message that all is well in this moment, and now it’s time to heal.
Biofeedback training is a technology I use when clients are ready to really dig in and take their experience to the next level. Here we can practice managing breath and the stress response in real-time. Observing heart rate variability (HRV) is a fascinating way to get a glimpse into how every thought and emotion drives our biophysical responses.
Carol –
Clients come to me because they are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. Or they feel unwell, but their health check is up to normal. The clients are doing what they know to do but are not having any success or relief. As a Nurse Coach and Nutritional Counselor, I counsel and coach people who want to feel better and become educated and empowered to stay well.
I look at the whole person and blend my experience into an approach I call Integrative Nourishment.
Integrative Nourishment looks at optimal digestion and gut health as an essential base to health. How food, digestion, stress, and lifestyle are impacting your body’s ability to digest food and create nourishment. Food creates medicine for body, mind, and emotional health only if it is optimally digested and absorbed.
In working with clients, we work together to create a personalized Wellness Plan. I call it their road map. It consists of optimal food choices, support for digestion, and self-care practices. After the initial plan, we work together in a coaching platform so their health changes are successful and sustainable.
Another difference in my practice is the technology I work with. For each new client, our initial visit includes a biocommunication scan that helps assess the unique areas of nourishment that are out of balance. This way we can really customize action steps that support the client’s health and wellness goals.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
