Hi Lewana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Lewana Kidane I’m 24 years old and I am the owner of “The Body Contour Clinic.” The Body Contour Clinic is a luxury spa located in the Washington D.C metro area we specializes in cosmetic beauty services. I’m originally from San Francisco, CA. I am a first-generation American, I left The Bay Area after High school to attend Spelman College in 2016 and later transferred to Trinity Washington University because I was offered a scholarship I couldn’t deny!
Furthermore, I came to Washington DC to continue my education. I majored in Health Sciences, however, I’ve always wanted to start my own business and always had an interest in marketing! My parents came from a small country in East Africa called “Eritrea” where they didn’t get the opportunity to go to school due to their circumstances, both of my parents are immigrants and came to America speaking little to no English with no job, or any resources. I’ve seen my family turn their situation from nothing into something. It has always inspired me to pave the way for my future by starting my own business. So now where do I begin? It all started in 2020, in the midst of a pandemic. I found out about Body Sculpting because I was getting serviced consistently. I fell in love with the entire process and how it made me feel afterwards, I suddenly thought I could see myself doing this and making other women feel good about themselves and embrace their beauty and flaws by enjoying their process also!
I knew I wanted to take my business to an extensive high level, by having great customer service, integrity, great service. I knew I wanted to educate, mentor women, open up a salon, and create a space for women in the beauty industry to grow and learn. My goal was to not only run the business but I was on a mission to educate young women in our communities through medical beauty procedures. When I first started I was extremely motivated, nervous, and scared being that I had 0 sales experience or marketing experience, anything business related. So before starting my business I took one full month of strictly just planning and preparing for all the large obstacles ahead.
I would watch videos on how to grow my business for hours, purchase multiple notebooks to write my goals in, write a game plan and manifest things I envisioned for my business and I prayed daily hoping this was something that was for me. The first month I opened my business I had a goal which was to have 20-30 clients which would’ve been a huge milestone for me, I would be so thankful. God had other plans for me and I was completely in shock! I was fully booked with 150 clients my first month of starting my business and from there word of mouth, awesome results and the business took off and I then became a full-time Body Sculpting Technician.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest struggles when first starting were finding mentors in the industry being that was it was still very new and I was the first in my area to offer this service.
Additionally, it took a lot of trial and error in the start. This new journey in being an entrepreneur was definitely challenging. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy so I always prepared for failure. I was learning as I went and always researched as much as I could.
I knew nothing great came easy so I was aware that this was all a part of the journey, having setbacks and overcoming them, but the support of clients and a large community who started this journey with us inspired us to keep going.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice on finding a mentor is to be patient and do your own research.
I would recommend finding someone in a position you aim to be in and networking with them. To manifest whatever it is that you want.
If you want it, speak it into existence and it’s already yours. Lastly, I would get myself out there and attend events with like-minded folks, if your interest is in beauty attend a cosmetic expo and connect with those and introduce yourself and ask questions.
