Meet Kylie Arnold of Kylie’s Desserts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylie Arnold.

Kylie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always loved cooking and baking. Growing up, I was very close with my grandmother whom I spent a lot of time baking with. One of the things that I always looked forward to was making Christmas cookies with her every year for our family. I knew from a young age that I wanted to run my own restaurant or bakery one day.

I have very severe allergies which play a major role in my life, and I wanted to run a business that could be a safe place for other people with allergies. I had the opportunity to attend Sollers Point Technical High School where I took Culinary Arts classes and learned so much about the culinary world. My instructor, Chef Jeffery Smith, used to own a restaurant in Baltimore called the Chameleon.

He taught me more than any teacher I’ve ever had and helped me realize my potential. A few years ago, my grandmother moved into an assisted living home, so I kept our tradition alive with my mom by making Christmas cookies at our house. I started branching off into new types of cookies such as decorated sugar cookies and every year my family and friends told me that I should start selling my cookies.

In March of 2021, my grandmother passed away at the age of 93. Soon after, I finally decided to try to sell my cookies for Mother’s Day on Facebook. Before I knew it, my business took off, and I couldn’t be more grateful. I think of my grandmother every day and how much she would have loved to see the things that I create.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I have a lot to be thankful for.

Running your own business is never an easy thing to do, and since my business took off before I could test the waters, I had to do a lot of learning as I went. One of the main struggles for me is balancing my schedule.

I not only work full time, but I’m also a full-time college student working towards earning my Bachelor’s degree in business administration. The work that I do is extremely time-consuming since the intricate sugar cookies that I’m known for take several days to make.

All-nighters are something that I’m very familiar with.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Kylie’s Desserts is a home-based dessert shop that is run solely by me. I specialize in custom-decorated sugar cookies, but I offer many types of desserts.

I would say that something that sets me apart from other businesses is the fact that I can put practically anything that a customer wants onto a cookie by hand. This makes each order very personalized and special. My favorite thing about running this business is being able to make people happy with my creations and getting to make desserts for major life events such as weddings and baby showers.

Although, I wish more people with allergies knew about my business since they may feel more comfortable ordering desserts from someone who has the same allergies and understands their significance.
