Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimia’ Workman.
Hi Kimia’, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started in entertainment in elementary school. My parents would put me in all the fashion shows and dance recitals. At the age of 6 I went to Anna Appacellas School of Dance in East Baltimore. I loved dancing, but through my middle school years I transitioned into sports. By high school I was a 3 season athlete participating in volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter, and softball in the spring. Even though sports was my focus at the time I always took theater class as my electives. That continued on in college, even though I was a 2 season athlete in college, on a volleyball and basketball scholarship, I could never stay away from theater. By my 3rd year of college I quit sports and got back into dance, which took me on a career I never thought was possible which was being a back up dancer and choreographer. Through that, my love for music kept growing and growing, and eventually I became an artist. I realized focusing on music and acting were the loves of my life. That’s how I am where I am today. It’s been a blessing to balance both careers because they both intertwine with each other. I write, direct, act, and produce, and movies need soundtracks. So now I can write my own music into movies. I truly enjoying doing it all.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely has not been a smooth road, lol. I was at a point where I was working a job, doing dance gigs, going on acting auditions, and working in radio, all at once. It’s always hard to focus on one thing when you are multitalented, and I was completely drained. I didn’t really have direction and I felt all over the place. It’s one of those things where you want to do everything you’re talented at because you never know what might pop off or what could be that next big opportunity. My mental health suffered, my relationships suffered, and I was still struggling financially. But through all the trials and errors, you learn how to focus on what truly makes you happy. I chose to only focusing on acting, writing, and directing. Through that, music came back to me, even when that wasn’t my focus and I wasn’t expecting it to. You have to learn along the way it’s ok yo say no. Sure, you will make some people upset at you, but at the end of the day, you and your mental health comes first.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an actress, writer, director, producer, and recording artist. I was also a former radio personality and dancer/choreographer. I have starred in several films, as well as starred in new media drama and comedy series with multiple recurring roles, including my first series I wrote, directed, and starred in called Shock Nation. I am in several movies on streaming platforms, some of which are Flood, Bye For Now, Life of An Alphamale, BMore Careful, and the lead of the hit Tubi movie, “Queen of Hearts” written/directed by friend and business partner Tyeisha Downer, starring Robert Ri’chard (Chocolate City, Coach Carter), Tray Chaney (HBO’s The Wire, TV One’s Saints and Sinners), and Jeremy L. Carver (Young Lucious on Fox’s Empire), just to name a few. I am also in several other films which has yet to be released. and we are currently in post production for my first Romantic Comedy movie I wrote, directed, and starred in with many talented actors called The Miserable Life. As far as music, I’ve performed at many clubs, participated in artist showcases, and been on the stages of some of Baltimore’s biggest festivals. I have 4 mixtapes out, Belladonna Volumes 1-3 and Throwback Thursday, which you can find on my YouTube page (kimiaworks) and I have an EP titled “Back 2 Self” and an album titled “Love 2 Hate Me”, along with many songs as a featured artist on all major music platforms. I am a partner of Dare To Dream Films and Swagmatik music.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Besides going to Disney World lol I remember how I would entertain myself. I was an only child so I was creative at a young age lol. I remember I would play teacher and have my stuffed animals sitting around and I would create worksheets and actually hand them out and teach a lesson. I also remember playing restaurant where I would create food out of construction paper and take make pretend orders. When I look back at all that I’m like wow I was really playing the “role” of a teacher and a waitress.
