Meet Kevin Moody of Preparing Youth For Tomorrow

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Moody.

Kevin Moody

Hi Kevin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began within a family deeply rooted in service. With a lineage of educators and healthcare professionals, caring for others was ingrained in my blood. Fresh out of high school at 17, I discovered my passion for coaching football, which led me to eventually work within the school system, fostering bonds with students both in the classroom and on the field. Transitioning to the Department of Juvenile Services, I connected with youth, whom many would deem “troubled,” but these connections helped me realize their systemic challenges.

Eventually, I transitioned to another career, which I’ve been a part of for the past decade, in which I’ve dedicated myself to a police department, where my passion for youth advocacy grew even stronger. This journey culminated in founding my non-profit, “Preparing Youth for Tomorrow, Inc.,” which aimed to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline by providing mentoring and fostering stronger community and law enforcement relationships. Through that mentorship and advocacy, we’re working to empower youth and reshape their futures with a vision extending far beyond the confines of Baltimore.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been quite interesting. While I wouldn’t call it smooth sailing, it hasn’t been overly tumultuous. I’ve been fortunate to be part of a vast network of supportive individuals who have provided invaluable guidance. Despite lacking prior experience in running a nonprofit, the encouragement and mentorship I received helped me navigate the process of establishing one.

The first issue was filling out the paperwork and ensuring that we would pass the IRS requirements to be granted a 501(c)(3) because you often hear how hard that beginning part of the process is. However, once the paperwork was sorted and approved, newer challenges emerged. Getting the word out about our organization and securing grant funding has been a hurdle.

Navigating the complexities of nonprofit requirements and legalities has also been daunting. Yet, through collaboration and teamwork, we’ve tackled these growing pains together. I’m grateful for my cohesive team, and with perseverance, I’m confident we’ll continue to overcome obstacles and fulfill our mission and vision.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a 501(c)(3) organization founded by a dedicated police officer with a clear mission: to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community while dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline affecting adolescents in Baltimore City and surrounding areas. What sets us apart is our authenticity – we are real police officers committed to donating our time to the community because we understand the significance of our mission from our daily interactions.

Our organization’s core is creating spaces for open communication and dialogue. We visit schools to connect with youth, showing them we are human, caring individuals who have overcome similar struggles. Through mentoring, empowerment, and leading by example, we inspire them to be the change they want to see.

In addition to our school outreach, we host support groups for men and women, providing judgment-free zones for individuals to share and support one another. We also organize community events such as clean-ups, movie nights, and holiday drives, fostering a sense of unity and giving back.

What makes me most proud is our track record of success. Despite being a relatively new organization, we’ve consistently exceeded our goals and gained recognition within the community. However, our work is far from over, and we invite the community to join us in our efforts. Whether volunteering time, following us on social media, or supporting our fundraising events like our upcoming golf tournament, PYT-eeing Off ‘Fore’ the Future, on August 23, 2024, together, we can make a lasting impact and build a brighter future for Baltimore.

Alright, so before we go, can you talk to us about how people can work, collaborate, or support you?
People can work with us by volunteering to assist with carrying out our mission. It would all be very helpful, whether it’s assisting with events, programs, or administrative tasks.

Also, financial contributions are vital for us to sustain our operations and expand their impact. Individuals can donate money, goods, or services to support our cause. And remember, many donations are tax deductible!

Another vital ask would be for people to spread awareness because sharing information about the mission, programs, events, and initiatives via word of mouth, social media, or other channels can help raise awareness and attract support.

Offer Skills and Expertise: Individuals with specific skills or expertise could offer services pro bono. Whether it’s legal advice, marketing support (we’re constantly looking for a videographer and someone to handle social media marketing), or IT assistance, those special skills would be especially helpful and appreciated.

Attend Events: By participating in fundraisers, workshops, and other gatherings, it not only provides support, but also fosters networks and connections within the communities that we serve.

Advocate: Advocating for causes supported by us through petitions, lobbying, and community engagement could help raise awareness and bring about social change. As our mission statement points out, we strive to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline, and the work we plan to do to make that vision come true will need the support of others.

Lastly, you could join the board: we are still actively searching for board members who has great experience, leadership, strategic thinking, and decision making skills to guide the organizations direction and growth.
