Meet Kathy Yorkshire of Bara’ Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Yorkshire.

Hi Kathy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Bara’ Beauty emerged from a personal family necessity and a determination to discover remedies for our skin and hair challenges. It started with me. Tired of perm treating my hair and curious to know my natural hair again, I decided to stop getting my hair relaxed. I spent a lot of time and money looking for products that worked but to no avail. Around that time, my oldest daughter suffered from eczema, my husband had painful ingrown hairs, and my youngest daughter had acne. Nothing the dermatologist prescribed worked.
Through my own frustration and disappointment, I took it upon myself to research and I created my own products. After gifting products to people one year on a Mother’s Day, many of them asked me if I started a business but I had not. They were telling me how much the products were working for them and said they would support if I turned my passion into a business. At the time, I was in grad school and did not want to get distracted. However, I did have the desire to start a business and I began to pray about it. One day, it hit me and after my “ah ha” moment, I realized this was it. I was going to start a product-based business making hair and skin products.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I struggled with confidence until I realized how liberating it was to be empowered this way: formulating products people could enjoy and find effective for their needs.

I struggled with understanding my business’s finances. I did not have or know all the necessary variables that would enable me to ensure that I was making a profit on each product. Not to mention that I did not find the financial aspects of the business very fun. I was more excited about formulating products that people found effective for their issues. I wanted to solve problems that way.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was shy at times and other times, I was a handful for my teachers, especially in my primary years. I loved animals. Fun fact: I had ducks as pets for some time.
