Meet Janie Alston of The Empress Team

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janie Alston

Hi Janie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Wow! This is the second time I was nominated to be featured here and so much growth has happened since my last feature! In the last feature in 2022, I gave much detail of my early background. I announced that I was launching a real estate team. Well I have successfully done that and we are continuously growing! As with any business, when you start it has its rough patches, but I must say, things are working out! When the idea of me starting a team surfaced, I was totally against it. I had managed people for so many years, and I was quite drained from it. Let me tell you, having friends and colleagues who believe in you and push you to greatness is the best thing in the world. I kept fighting it, but they sure wouldn’t let it go. So, here we are heading into 3 years or owning a real estate team! When I sat down and thought about what I envisioned my team to be, the first thing I said was, I don’t want to be like everyone else. I want to stand out! One of the most rewarding things that I love is Women Empowerment. I feel that we as Women are so far behind in society, and I truly believe we can change that! I decided to start an All Women’s Real Estate Team. Within the real estate industry, there are more Women Realtors than there are men, but you wouldn’t know that because men dominate the industry. I am determined to change that! The last 4 years, I have hosted many community events and women empowerment events. They have been truly successful and inspiring to many. As we grow, our event presence will grow as well.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road, but many lessons have been learned through those rough patches. I am very sure many more obstacles and challenges will happen and I know that we will pull through them all. Real Estate isn’t an easy fete, neither is being a brand new team and an All Women’s team at that! There’s so much to do and learn! Branding and Marketing is so crucial in this business, you want the brand to stain the households that it reaches. Finding the right members to be apart of your team is even more crucial because they must align with the core values and represent the team well. Having elevated standards is key to making sure that we stand out from the norms.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in providing excellent service to my clients looking to buy or sell a home. I work with VA loans, FHA loans, Conventional loans, etc. Currently, I service the entire State of Maryland and Virginia, soon expanding to more states. I will walk you through from start to finish on your home buying/selling journey. As one of the Top Producers in my brokerage, I strive to create lifetime relationships with my clients so I can continue to thrive in my business. I also love to give back to the community by hosting many community charitable events, women empowerment events and supporting local and small businesses. This has been so beneficial and valuable to my life both personally and professionally! Its also so great to have people come together, network, make new friends and connections. I get asked the question all the time, “Why do you love Real Estate so much?” Real Estate isn’t just a career or business for me; it’s my passion. While the paycheck is the greatest thing, my absolute joy is helping someone get the keys to their new home. You never know what someone is going through in their lives, mentally, physically, emotionally, and being the one person someone can come to entirely with their guard down, confide in you and trust you to guide them and help them accomplish what most may be the biggest accomplishment of their life, is where the absolute joy comes in for me. Everyone has a story, and none of them are the same. I’ve seen so many life stories happen that I could write a book or maybe 2 or 3. Helping someone build their legacy helps me build mine. Real Estate is my purpose!

What does success mean to you?
Success for me is about creating a legacy of empowerment, both for my family and the community I serve. It’s about building a thriving real estate business that reflects my values of integrity, loyalty, and community service, while helping first-time homebuyers, veterans, and families achieve their dreams of homeownership. Success is also about leading The Empress Team to new heights by fostering growth, consistency, and excellence within my team, all while staying true to my vision of empowering women and supporting Black-owned businesses. On a personal level, success means achieving financial independence, traveling, spending quality time with my son, and making space for experiences that bring joy and fulfillment. It’s not just about reaching production goals or accolades; it’s about living authentically, lifting others as I climb, and finding balance in the journey.
