Meet Jamil Honesty of Baltimore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamil Honesty.

Hi Jamil , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised in Staten Island , New York City . I moved to Baltimore as a teen in the mid 90s. Baltimore became my second home I quickly adjusted because although very different from the Big Apple I still identified with Baltimores tough blue collar east coast vibe . Growing up here it was just me my mom and little brother . I often took care of my brother while my mom worked to provide for the house . Getting my first job I didn’t hesitate to offer to help my mother watching her work hard motivated me to get a job so I can help her . Through out the years my love for music grew and I would pursue a career recording my first demo in 1995 with my group “The Wild Kingdom” . Hearing my song played on Morgan States radio station 88.9 “Strictly Hip Hop” for the first time gave me the tunnel vision I have now til this day .

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a struggle but a beautiful struggle . The process has been long but beautiful like anything worth achieving has its peaks and valleys. To give context my biggest struggle has always been navigating my personal and business life that can be difficult at times .

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Jamil Honesty is a lyricist, producer, and independent creative whose foundation was built through decades of writing, rooted in Staten Island, New York, and sharpened through years living in Baltimore. Influenced by artists like Nas, Black Thought, and the raw storytelling tradition of ‘90s hip-hop, he developed a style centered on layered lyricism, social reflection, and cinematic boom bap production.

In 2021, during a period where independent artists were redefining ownership and creative control, Jamil Honesty launched Black House Records as both a label and a movement. What began as a platform to release his own music evolved into a hub for authentic underground hip-hop, visual art, live events, and collaborations. The goal was to create something artist-driven — a space where quality, substance, and culture came before trends.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a shy kid playful as any other kid . I have always been a lover of art and music . My vast imagination and creativity would almost never leave me bored . I had friends growing up but never had a problem being by myself . I loved comic books and action movies growing up I would draw and write my own comic books and stories at times . I loved to write . I loved family gatherings and spending time with friends and family .
