Meet Heike Yates

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Heike Yates.

Heike Yates

Hi Heike, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Germany, where exercise was part of everyday life—walking to the bakery or biking to pick up groceries. When I moved to the United States, I noticed everyone driving and jogging. Inspired, I bought a pair of sneakers and tried running, but quickly got shin splints. It’s not a great start on my fitness adventure.

When my son was born, we decided I should stay home to raise our child. Becoming a stay-at-home mom was tougher than I expected. I felt lonely and restless, and during my pregnancy, I gained 50 pounds. My doctor assured me it was OK to indulge, but after Jesse was born, I struggled to lose weight. I cycled through every diet you can imagine—none of them worked.

Then, a friend from the playground invited me to try a fitness class at our local YMCA. Reluctantly, I agreed, expecting the worst. To my surprise, the class was a blast! We did aerobic dance moves to pop music, and soon, I was hooked. I kept going even after my friend dropped out, drawn by the sheer fun and the break it gave me from daily life.

My enthusiasm didn’t go unnoticed. The instructor suggested I train to become a teacher. Despite my doubts—I’d been an office worker with no fitness background—my husband encouraged me to try it. The training was intense: learning dance routines, anatomy, and how to cue based on the music’s beat. I struggled initially, especially with following the beat, until my instructor discovered I was partially deaf in one ear. She helped me learn to feel the beat through vibrations, and after weeks of practice, I finally passed the test.

From there, my fitness career took off. I taught various classes—step aerobics, boxing, spinning, and more. I became a certified personal trainer and, later, an aerobics director, coaching other instructors. My passion for fitness grew into teaching at conventions and creating a Pilates with Resist-A-Ball program. The first of its kind!

I was ready to start my studio, and after years of working at gyms and fitness studios, I opened my HEYlifeteraining Pilates and Wellness boutique studio in Maryland. It was scary to start working independently without a regular paycheck, but I was determined to create a space for people to get stronger and healthier based on my beliefs and fitness background.

As a sole studio owner with limited hours, accommodating everyone on my schedule was difficult. That’s when Pursue Your Spark was born. Helping women in midlife get strong, healthier, and happier with my online programs was the answer to my limited schedule. As the owner of two businesses, I was helping more people and had control over my schedule.

But I didn’t stop there; I created the Pursue Your Spark podcast to reach even more women in midlife. Helping women in midlife is my passion, and I can reach so many women either in person or through my programs and podcasts, helping them feel more confident in their bodies and minds.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
After my son was born, I felt isolated and dissatisfied as a new stay-at-home mom. The extra 50 pounds I gained during pregnancy only added to my stress, trapping me in a cycle of ineffective diets that reminded me of my teenage struggles with weight.

Reluctantly, I joined a friend for a fitness class, dreading the peppy routines I’d seen on TV. But as soon as we started moving to the music, I felt an unexpected joy. It was truly fun and reignited a spark in my daily routine that I hadn’t realized was missing.

Yet, transitioning from participant to instructor was challenging, especially with the music. I loved the energy and movement but couldn’t sync with the beat regarding teaching. It seemed so natural for everyone else, but I was constantly half a step behind, awkwardly out of rhythm. This struggle with the musical aspect of the classes threatened to derail my aspirations of becoming an instructor.

My initial attempt to teach disappointed the program coaches. Their feedback hit hard, echoing my old insecurities. I felt almost defeated, wondering if this path wasn’t meant for me. But then, I shared something I hadn’t before—I was partially deaf in one ear, which made following the beat incredibly challenging.

This revelation was a turning point. One compassionate coach took a different approach—she placed my hand on the speaker so I could feel the vibrations of the beat. For the first time, I truly felt the music. It was an eye-opening experience, and I was determined to overcome this barrier from that moment.

I practiced relentlessly, placing my hand on the speaker at home, feeling each beat, and learning how to translate that into movements. This tactile approach was my breakthrough. When I led the class again, this time in tune with the music, the coaches saw a different instructor. Their approval and encouragement were overwhelming.

Overcoming this challenge boosted my confidence and deepened my passion for fitness. It taught me that with creativity and persistence, I could adapt and thrive, no matter the obstacle. This experience fueled my belief in what I could offer others, inspiring them to overcome their hurdles.
