Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Fox.
Heather, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I became a licensed massage therapist in 2013. I worked at various places either as an employee or “independent contractor” such as massage envy, massage green, chiropractic practice, and old town massage center. prior to the pandemic, the last place I worked at was the Old town massage center in Alexandria. However, we had to shut down during the pandemic and unfortunately this center shut down for good. During the shutdown, I was searching for work and had job offers but I wasn’t completely satisfied with the offers.
So earlier in Jan 2020, I went to a float center and loved the place, became a member. They had a reiki practitioner there however, she left at the start of the pandemic. So in May when Synergy Float Center reopened May, I went to float and manifested an idea of owning my own practice someday. I was surprised by the idea because there was a time I didn’t want to own massage practice.
I talked to the general manager at the time about it and he told me to email the owner about a proposal to add massage services to the center since they had space for therapists like me. A week later, I decided to go for it then. We worked out an agreement and here I am being a small business owner/solo practitioner. Synergy and I are like referral partners, we work together to provide great services to our clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a struggle in the beginning during the summer because it was new and it was during the pandemic. In some way, I had to start over. It was frustrating at times. I was opened on a limited schedule, just the weekend (Friday thru Sunday).
I had three clients per weekend. I will be honest there were times I wanted to quit and take my losses but something in me said don’t quit just yet. But one day I met Eric, my business coach through a Facebook group for massage therapists and business owners. He helped me be more successful in my practice. I’m grateful for that.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Massage therapist specializing in chronic pain and tension and injury recovery. I rent space inside of a float center in old town Alexandria. I provide an intuitive, nurturing, and safe space for healing to help clients get the results from their treatment goals. Everything is customized to their needs and goals. I offer therapeutic massages, MLD, spinal reflex therapy, prenatal massages, and massage cupping. I’m really proud that I can provide pain relief to my clients.
